Q:I have a home in Manchester Tn and we have been slowly remodeling the home. It is about 200 sq ft of living space. Our normal electric bill is about 50 a month. We would like to add some solar panels to the home to help reduce the amount of the bill. How many panels do I need and what would be the cost? I am not trying to go completely of the grid but I would like to start somewhere and maybe over the years be able to add. What is your recommendation for a reasonable cost of under 2 to 3 k??
Unless there has been some major breakthrough in solar panel efficiency - Forget it. I had looked at some utility interactive systems where the electricity generated by the solar panels went through a special inverter and into the electrical system of the house, any power you didn't use went backwards through the meter and into the grid. I figured that even if it was sunny every day, it would take about 20 years to break even on the system. That is, if I had invested $5,000 in a small system, to save $5,000 off the electric bill would take 20 years. If I had $5,000 to invest, this wouldnt be the place! It would take much more than 20 years of electrical savings to match even a modest investment. Then, don't forget what happens if 0 years from now the inverter or some of the panels fail and need replaced. Invest in fluorescent lights, maybe even LEDs. You will see a much quicker return on investment. Install more insulation, put in a heat-pump system. I appreciate you desire to save some energy, solar just isn't going to be worth doing, at least not yet.
Q:(For a project)I know they are made of silicon, but I want to EVERYTHING they are made of. Ex Metal (What kind)Please tell me everything used from their production to the finished projectThank you
Solar panels are slabs of semi-conductor metal. Technically speaking, they are a slab of silicon semi-conductor doped or added with impurities to make it a better conductor. Solar panels could also be made of Gallium Arsenide which is a semi-conductor metal exclusively used in photo-voltaic cells. The silicon slabs are polished and glossed before doping. After processing, for protection, a thin glass layer is embossed on the solar cells slab. Silicon also is shiny and reflects about 35% of sunlight. Hence, an anti-reflective coating is usually applied over the slabs to reduce the amount of sunlight lost.
Q:Photo-Voltaic solar panels are very expensive. Most of a home's energy needs are for heating water, heating and air-conditioning. All of these can be met with thermal solar collectors which are much less expensive. The thermal solar panels would heat water stored in a hot water tank which then can be used as hot water, to heat the home, or as the heat source to a Lithium Bromide Absorption chiller to air-condition a home. With the base line needs met without expensive panels and without inefficient energy conversions, only a small Photo-Voltaic array would be needed for the remaining power needs and since those needs are variable, there would still be power to sell to the grid.
I agree with you John and for the same reason already put forth as a negative. Solar thermal is a more mature technology. This is the reason why I spent so much of the last winter studying it. I can be reasonably sure that what I learn will not be obsolete tomorrow with a new technological breakthrough. I built a solar addition/greenhouse to personally study the effects. So solar thermal panels are not the only way to go. With respect to electrical production. I have seen parabolic reflectors coupled to stirling engines and solar thermal trough heaters used to supplement steam generation for alternatively gas fired steam / electrical generation plants. On a trip to China over 4 years ago I noticed solar hot water vacuum tube collectors being sold in their local hardware and big box style stores. These were gravity fed package units intended to have the tank on the roof with a supplemental electric backup. The vacuum tube collectors seem to be one of the latest innovations in this technology. Using phase change materials temperatures in these panels can be produced in excess of 400 deg F. and they are useful in colder temps and on cloudy days. While they are still costly for many applications, I have been discussing the use of vacuum tube collectors with the owner of a laundrymat. Solar thermal will not pay back as well as conservation in many cases of older construction, but it currently seems better than photovoltaic panels. Solar thermal requires more understanding of systems and relative efficiencies. In one way solar thermal is more like the electric car while the internal combusion engine is like photovoltaic. The idea of producing electricity from the sun is a sexier idea. It is also more in line with our paridigm of: just producing lots of energy and to H with any conservation efforts. For that reason it seems to get more press.
Q:I have four power packs for solar lights. They have 3 AA .2volt batteries of 2450 mAh capacity installed in series for a total supply voltage of 4 volt maximum for the lights. I want to charge all four packs at once off a single 6 volt solar panel. With the four packs wired in parallel, what capacity output (wattage) panel do I need to charge the batteries in an 8 hour day?
WIRE THEM IN PARALLEL BUT MUST VIA ONE BLOCKING DIOED FOR EACH 4V BATTERY BANK ( LIGHT) BETWEEN SOLAR PANEL OUTPUT TO EACH BATTERY BANK. DIODE USES LIKE N5404 THAT CAN HANDLE 3A OR HIGHER IS BETTER. TOTAL AH = 9.8 AH FROM ALL 4 LIGHTS. NOT 25AH FROM YOUR MISTAKE RATE. TO CHARGE THEM FULLY IN 8 HOURS, CHARGING CURRENT AT LEAST .3A BUY SOLAR PANEL HAS OUTPUT 6V 2A ( OR 0W ) IS GOOD ENOUGH.
Q:Can solar panels be used for charging outdoor power tools?
Yes, solar panels can be used for charging outdoor power tools. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to power various devices, including outdoor power tools such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and chainsaws. This provides a sustainable and environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional methods of charging these tools.
Q:Properties of solar panel?I know this is too general, but i am to write a report on the materials used to make solar panels, and i am to include the physical, mechanical ,and chemical properties of the materials. It's just too general, such that i am lost. There are so many types of solar panels. So i hope some experts on this subject can give me a general guide lines ,maybe the tensile strength ?as much as you can please.
The main property of solar panel is to convert solar energy into electrical energy. Solar panel has been made to convert solar energy i.e. natural energy into electrical energy. A combination of solar cells together forms a solar panel. Solar panel converts solar energy into electrical energy. Solar panel depends on natural and free resource rather than paid resources. Easy to plant. Low cost. Long lasting. Pollution free.
Q:what is one benifit in a solar panel?
Solar panels enable use of sunlight for energy. Sunlight is a renewable resource, which means it won't run out, unlike coal and uranium (nuclear energy) and so forth. So there you go! It secures electricity for us for as long as the sun is there... which will be billions of years
Q:I am heading to Nepal and do not want to lose power on my cameras but they can only be charged via quot;plugging inquot;. A USB connection does not work. Looking for a solar panel to clip to my bag or carry that I can plug in the charger as if plugging in to wall outlet. Thanks.
Solar panels require a charge converter before it can be used by an AC source. There is no direct solar panel with built in charge converters that I know of because, when purchasing panels, you must purchase the wattage requirements of the job (this can be several panels linked), and a charge converter that will handle the <? panels required. A chain of stores up here in Canada have a portable battery pack that has a solar panel to increase its charge capacity or duration, but its not something you would want to lug around for long periods of time, because is weights in about 3 lbs.
Q:i am doing this group project fro school. I would like to know if anybody knows anything about how to read a Spec. Sheet on Solar panels and where I could go to start researching them. Anything would be great!
Rate ,power , voltage and effencicney are four important iterms to choose one battery.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on a winery or vineyard?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on a winery or vineyard. In fact, many wineries and vineyards around the world have embraced solar energy as a sustainable and cost-effective solution to power their operations. The vast open spaces available on these properties make them ideal for solar panel installations, which can generate clean and renewable electricity to meet the energy demands of the winery or vineyard. Additionally, solar panels can help wineries and vineyards reduce their carbon footprint and lower their energy costs in the long run.
