Well since you have patterns on your Duvet covers already, i think it best to get a rug that is plain. instead of going for patterns go for textures (e.g a shaggy rug) any light colour would go good such as beige, white, cream or even a grey stone colour to match the headboard, no pattern in my opinion but it is your room! Of course you should change rugs when they are wet. They get chilled otherwise. If the rug is waterproof and the inside is warm and dry then it is okay to leave them, but it is better to have two rugs so that you can have one on the horse and the other drying.

I do not think that the iron with produce enough heat to reach the base of the rug fibers. IOW, not a good idea. What the linked sites recommend is steam cleaning, even a professional steam cleaning. Be sure to let the professional know your rugs have a flea infestation. The cost might be a couple hundred for a professional steam cleaning, but that is worth the cost to be rid of fleas . If you have small rugs you can run them through the a hot washer load, and depending on fabric, a dryer.

Q:It's like a Persian rug (much less expensive--a rustic rug for our lodge-style home that's perfect as a wallhanging, but we want to hang the rug like a tapestry using velcro against a velcro-stapled board (as they do in museums). Yes, you could crochet it directly onto the top of the bag (by poking small holes in the fabric and crocheting stitches into these holes...that's what the other kind responder was talking about, I believe) OR you can whip-stitch (over and over) the trim onto the top of the bag by hand OR you could even zig-zag it on the machine. This last would be strong, although it might not look as attractive as neat hand-stitching. The hand stitching might also be easier to remove if the trim ever frayed and you wanted to replace it.
