You can clean a carpet, but if it has been wet and has a pad under the carpet, you will have to cut the carpet loose at the wall and remove the pad from under the carpet. You can not clean that and the mold smell is in the pad. Either replace the pad or just leave it out. I never put pad under carpet. Now clean the carpet and add some mildew killer to the cleaning agent. They sell this at Lowes and Home Depot. Reattach the carpet at the wall with a carpet tacker prior to cleaning as it might shrink otherwise.

you can put things back on a wet carpet. However there are a few things you need to watch out for. Bare metal,(check bottom of furniture legs for metal caps)it will rust and leave a rust stain on the carpet. any redish color wood. ie. mahogony, cherry, red oak will leave a stain on the carpet, that cannot be removed. any boxes or papers with ink on them can transfer into the carpet. These are the most common problems. By blocking the furniture, you can prevent these problems. Blocking the furniture is simply placing something between the wet carpet and what will cause a stain. Plastic, saran wrap, wax paper, styrofoam all work. Even ordinary paper will do. Personally I use wax paper, its cheap and easy to use, with no mess. When I clean carpets It ussually takes 4-6 hours to dry. Professionals using portables ussually take 8-10 hours to dry. doing it yourself shouldn't take more ythen 12 hours to dry. If it does you're leaving the carpet too wet, spend more time vacuuming.

I have no idea, but maybe it's because it is simple to maintain. For instance if it is a hardwood floor it would be harder to keep it presentable and also it doesn't absorb the impact of our feet while walking around the house. In hardwood floor we have to wipe it and mop. I guess it just looks more comfortable. In my country we also had a lot the custom of having carpeted floors, but now we don't due to allergies stuff. If we have one we have to keep it very clean.
