Q:High voltage with small wire?
The limit on the size of current carrying conductor is the heat produced due to power losses which leads to failure of the conductor, the power losses depends mainly on the square of the current (P=I^2R) so in power transmission voltage is being stepped-up to high values to decrease current and, in turn, the conductor size is reduced. Theoretically we could step-up the voltage to extremely high values and thus we could have a very thin wire to carry the small current because P=VI so at constant power as voltage V increases the current I decreases. But there are also limits for stepping up voltage as the insulation is directly affected by the voltage. In case of insultaed cables, the insulating material (PVC or XLPE) will fail if the voltage reaches its Break-down Voltage. In case of overhead transmission lines (OHTLs) the conductors are insulated by air between phases and the suspended disk insulators each has their own breakdown voltages. It should be noted that safety regulations determine a safe distance of 1 cm per Kv that you should keep from high voltage conductor. This means that for a consductors carries voltage of 500kv you should allow a distance of 5 meters away from it for your safety as its magnetic effect is not exlusive on its surface but for a distance around it proportional with the voltage.
Q:Wiring in my house is different?
All wiring is different but the basics remain the same. Before attempting anything please turn off the power. If I have the good picture in my head, there are extension wires added to the black and white this would be done if the wire run though the wall was too short and needed a little extra to get wired properly to a fixture. If I look at the bad picture in my head you have a jump cable attached which is running to a second outlet or light fixture. If the extra wires go back into the ceiling leading somewhere else then it is probably running to a different fixture and this isn't the best way to run electrical. It could potentially overload your circuit. If it has been working for 40 years without a problem you are probably ok, so long as the fixture you're adding is within the same category as the fixture you're removing. The thick copper wire will be your ground wire and should be attached to the box, and to the outlet itself with screws. Good luck with that fixture.
Q:wiring a 3 prong dryer receptacle?
Whoa there! What you're describing is a 120 volt outlet (U.S. Canada). Every dryer I know of operates from 220 volts. For a three-prong, 220 volt plug, you should connect the black to one of the hot terminals and the red wire to the other hot terminal. The white wire, which is neutral, would go to the common terminal. The outlet box you describe is a 120 volt box. . .it just won't work! If you're operating a 220 volt dryer from 120 volts, you're asking for trouble. Besides, for a 120 volt outlet, you've got the connections all skewed. Here it is as looking at the outlet from the front: Black (hot) to small blade (brass screw), White (neutral) to large blade (silver screw), Copper (ground) to green grounding screw. You may have to run a 220 volt line from the dryer to a new breaker in your electrical service panel. I strongly suggest you leave this to a licensed, qualified electrician.

Hello there, 1) Excluding pickups, black wire hot or ground? They use black for both in that diagram. I believe the only ground wires are all marked as ground in the diagram. A ground wire will run from the case of a pot to somewhere. To the ground side of the jack. To the bridge. To another pot. As for what you bought, I have no idea what you are trying to say. There is no difference in the wire itself that is used for ground or hot. You can use any wire (except bare) for either of those. 2) The black wire from the bridge pickup goes to a terminal of the switch on the push/pull bridge volume pot. You may solder the wire and continue the same wire down to the terminal of the switch on the push/pull tone pot. Or you can use another wire to connect those switches. The black wire from the neck pickup go to the middle terminal of the neck volume pot. Again, you may continue the wire from the pickup or solder in another wire to connect to the switch on the push/pull neck tone pot. 3). When I run ground wires to the case of a pot. I used separate solder joints. I do not wrap the wires together and then solder them as a group onto the pot. I have tried that and got bad connection on some of the wires. Best to solder ground wires separately. On a switch terminal where you have two wires coming to the same terminal, I try to solder both wires at the same time to the terminal. 4). All connections are soldered. Also, you should be aware that not all pickups have the same colored wires. You need to check the color code for the brand of pickups you are using. Seymour Duncan makes his diagrams based on using his pickups. If you use some other brand, the color of the pickup wires may be different.
