- Q:I am about to buy new carpeting for the family room. The current carpeting is pretty regular carpet, although I don't know what the technical details are. The problem is that my son gets so upset because his toy cars and trains don't roll very well on the carpet and he tends to try to put them on tables, etc. or the hardwood. The cars, etc. do pretty well on the area rug, which isn't too thick. I need suggestions for the type of carpeting to buy that would allow cars and such to roll. Is it looped carpet? I know ti's strange request. Thanks!

- Q:I went to a heritage craft festival last year, and there was a lady making rugs. It was at a Colonial period mansion, and she said the rugs were found in the storage of the family, and never finished. So she was using similar materials, and following the pattern to finish them. I guess it was rug hooking, but I don't remember her calling it that. She would take a very thick piece of wool and pull it through the backing to make a little loop, then, on the same piece of wool, just make a loop in the next hole, no knots, no cut pieces..she said the fabric was so tight and the wool so thick that it would hold it in, and eventually the bottom would become felt from walking on it (she showed me the older portions of the piece). Is that the same as regular modern rug hooking? it doesn't seem like it...does anyone know if this sounds right? does anyone rug hook like this? Thanks!

- I myself hate carpet in my house. I see more and more people leaving the carpet out now days. And if you have pets, if there is an accident, it is easier to clean up if there is no carpet. You can still vacuum the hard floor, and it should keep dust down in your house because you can mop it and that helps. On top of that when ever mud is brought in it is easier to get up as well.
- Q:We are in the process of evaluating the replacement of carpeting on the top deck of our houseboat. The area is 560 sq. ft. and is glued down. The present carpet suffers from sun rot. 1. In the process of replacement, will we need to strip the old carpet from the surface of the fiberglass? a. What chemical would release the old glu without damage to the Fiberglass. b. Can a product be overlayed on the present surface? What kind of adhesive would we use? c. Scraping the glass surface could scar the surface. 2. Replacementa. - To get up the old adhesive the best product to use that won't harm the surface is charcoal lighter fluid. Buy an Indoor Outdoor carpet and adhere this with an exterior Liquid Nail. This should do the job!!! Good Luck!!!

- Q:My mother recently passed away. I had prepaid her rent for a full year. The bedroom had several stains on it and I recognize the carpet needed to be replaced, and I'm OK with paying for it. The bedroom is around 200 square feet in Connecticut. The landlord took the opportunity to replace the carpet with hardwood. He told me the carpet would have cost $600 installed but he paid extra for the hardwood out of his own pocket. The carpet that was there previously was the cheapest contractor grade material you can imagine. I have a hard time believing it cost $600 at $3 a square foot for cheap carpet installed. Should I be pressing this? I figured it would be $300 - $400, max, for similar off-white basic carpet.
- The law allows for normal wear of carpets. If the carpets were ruined then you are responsible for replacing them. You can ask the landlord for a copy of the estimate to replace the carpets but I am guessing $600 is reasonable for material and labor for 200 square feet.
- Q:Its been about 24 hours since we cleaned the carpet ourselves with a rented machine but the carpet is still wet in places. Should we give it more time? Its cool in the basement, but hot and humid outside. I'm guessing opening windows is not a good idea?
- This is bad news. You are going to get mold. I just learned about this the hard way. Get a fan or blower to speed up the drying. Have a pro check the pad for mold.
- Q:I'd like to know how REAL fur coats, bear skin rugs, etc. are made (by hand not industrial process) as I don't believe its tanning like in leather as it requires the fur to be stripped.
