Q:what is brass and steel used for and why?
By instruments do you mean musical instruments? Brass is used for musical instruments because it's strong but very malleable. It's easy to hammer and roll into sheets, or form into tubes and complex shapes. It's easy to work with using hand tools. It's also very corrosion resistant and polishes very well. It has an attractive gold-like color. It also has some effect on sound, though the shape and design of an instrument is much more important to the sound than the material that's used. Apart from musical instruments, brass is used for items that need to be both durable, easy to manufacture, and resistant to the elements. For example plumbing items like valves and screw couplings.brass is a lot easier to cut with machine tools than steel. It's also traditionally used for hardware on doors and cabinets because of it's color, low friction properties, and corrosion resistance. Brass also is toxic to bacteria, and so brass doorknobs disinfect themselves after about 9 hours. Steel is very strong and very cheap. Steel is basically iron with a small amount of carbon added which makes it much stronger. Iron is the fourth most common element in the earth's crust, after oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. Brass being a mixture (an alloy) of copper and zinc, with other metals sometimes added. Copper and zinc are the 27'th and 26'th most common elements. Therefore, it make sense that brass is much more expensive than steel. Steel is used for too many things to be listed. The use of steel technology has impacts on almost every aspect of modern life. Nearly all of the man-made objects you touch on a regular basis were made using steel tools and steel machinery.

Zinc. Steel is an alloy consisting mostly out of iron, In the reactivity seris, zinc is more reactive than iron. Therefore, zinc is more reactive than steel
Q:What is meant by 440 Steel?
440 is an AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) material specification. It specifies the precise quantities of carbon and other elements present in the alloy. Here are the constituents of AISI 440 steel: Carbon - 0.6 to 0.75% Chromium - 16 to 18% Manganese - less than 1% Molybdenum - less than 0.75% Phosphorus - less than 0.04% Silicon - less than 1% Sulfur - less than 0.03% Iron makes up the remainder. AISI 440 is a heat-treatable, precipitation-hardening stainless steel.
Q:Steel frames are completely out of the game...?
Plenty of racers are still winning races on steel bikes. Not at the pro level, but that has more to do with the fact that carbon bikes generate more profit for sponsors, than any other factor. Steel bikes are more durable than alu or carbon. The super-light bikes being sold today in carbon tend to break more often and only last a few years on average before needing replacement. A steel bike will last for decades and can shrug off things like minor crashes, scratches dings and dents that would render a carbon frame unsafe. Then there's the mechanical aspect. Carbon frames and parts require a torque wrench and special compounds to prevent accidental crushing from over-tightening. Many home mechanics end up ruining thier bikes because of simple user error. Alu frames are not so bad in this regard; these days I think alu bikes are the price/performance leaders in road bike frames.
Q:Best steel for a all purpose knife?
There is no right one answer, because the term all purpose knife covers a very broad spectrum. The same knife that would be good for wood carving will not be the same for food prep, and will not be the same for general utility purposes. I'll just give you my humble opinion. For fixed blade, hard use blades. Where you will be doing bush tasks like chopping, carving etc... 1095 carbon is generally the standard. Now, 1095 is a great steel, it isn't the BEST steel. There are other steels that can outperform it. But for the price and availability its hard to beat. For folders, I prefer a decent stainless, like aus 8. It holds a good edge, and will hold up to any tasks you need a folding knife to do. Contrary to what you will read on the internet, stainless steel is not all crap. Its just that cheap stainless is just that, cheap. Stainless steel is only as good as its tempering process, some companies such as boker do amazing things with the steel and make for an impressive blade. Just stay away from crap stainless. So to sum up. 1095 for fixed blades. aus 8 for folders. These are both common steels used by different companies. If you get caught up on finding the perfect steel, you may overlook more important aspects of the knife itself. Unless your fixed blade is mostly going to be a food processing, and skinning knife, then I would suggest a QUALITY stainless as well. Remember that all high carbon blades need to be kept oiled or they will start to rust very fast. Btw, I suggest anyone looking into knives to check out mora fixed blades. Incredibly cheap, sharp and durable. They are the rockstars of bushcraft.
Q:How to wear out stainless steel?
Its called stainless for a reason :) many grades are out there, 300 400 series. You could use acid to make it look older but you wouldnt want to cook with it after chemically converting it with acid.Personally i like cast iron. It will last a life time + and looks very cool. Sorry no safe way to do it and cook with it. B^
Q:steel building for horse barn?
I have two steel barns, one is 4 stables. 15 x12 for 3 stables and the other 12 x 18 I have a large tackroom and an area for storing gardening and farm light machinery. (Chain saws. strimmers and fencing stuff.) The second barn has 4 stables 12 x 15. an 8' aisle and then two large loose shed areas. 30' x 50'. I can run these as one pen if I want. I have 45' x 70' at the other end for storing hay and straw. Haven't a clue to the cost but it wasn't cheap! Although it is all steel the lower walls of the stables are all blocks. I didn't want to line the steel with wood as they eat it for fun. The loose shed are lined with hard board.

Q:What is the Rockwell (HRC) Indentation Hardness of Steel?
The general purpose default steel for hard tooling applications is A2 It's cheap, readily available and comes in many different shapes and sizes. It's easy to machine soft. It's easy to harden, you can do it yourself. It is very dimensionally stable during hardening. All the steels mentioned above are specialty steels - expensive to buy, hard to work with, expensive to heat treat and dimensionally unstable during heat treat.
Q:ceramic vs stainless steel headers HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a 98 civic?
4 into 2 into 1 is the style that the pipe finally necks down to one pipe. 4 into 1 is more restrictive but you wont really notice. Ceramic costs alot more but is better at keeping the high temps safe and wont warp or discolor, rust like other pipes, they are for more performance oriented vehicles. Stainless will do the job though for the average tuner.
