Q:I have a jade plant I would like to repot but I don‘t know what type of potting soil to use can I use regular potting soil or do I have to use a special kind of potting soil and what type of pot should I use for this plant
I've been working with house plants for over 45 years and have yet to find a perfect potting soil for tropical plants straight out of the bag. I usually have to mix my own to get it to be the best for the plant. I use equal parts bagged top soil, potting soil and vermiculite and make sure the mixture balls in my hand and then falls apart when I wiggle my finger. This shows the best texture to allow oxygen to the roots without clogging and preventing air circulation around the roots and prevents the plant from drowning. There are special mixes for succulents-which a jade is in the succulent group of tropical plants- that will allow good drainage and air circulation. The roots of most succulents are hair-like and very fine so over watering can be done very easily. Be sure you allow the top of the soil surface to dry to about 1/2 inch before you water gain. If the water drains out the bottom right away, it means that the soil was too dry and you should water a bit more often. Never allow the pot to sit in water longer than 20 minutes or you can get root rot and the plant will die very quickly. A sure sign of over watering is if your leaves drop off the stem very easily when touched and they are green and very full. If they are very flat and fall off, the you are under watering and need to water a bit more often. Jades and all succulents been bright indirect light all day in order to do well. You probably will not need to transplant I until you see roots coming out the bottom of the plant, just few before you will need to go into a the next size pot. Don't go too big or you will be in danger of over watering the first time you water the soil. They do not need a lot of fertilizer or plant food so don't give it any until next spring, and just a very little in your watering can when you water. Make sure the soil is a bit moist when you use fertilizer or it will burn the roots.
Q:i mist her a couple times a day is this bad
That'snormal. Most do not know how to drink out of a dish so they drink the water on leaves.
Q:what is the fireprooging materials
Water, Soil, Horticultural vermiculite, perlite, blotter in a glass, and so on.
Q:What is the difference between vermiculite and perlite?
Theur sis chunks, rly boi, sorda vermiculite.
Q:I'm square foot gardening, and I need vermiculite. I went to the Home Depot to get some, but the man I spoke with told me that they didn't carry it, but NuraLime was basically the same thing. But before I add this to my $100 worth of soil, can they be interchangable?
DO NOT MIST THE EGGS DIRECTLY it will cause them to go bad i had the misfortune of not knowing this about 10 years ago and mine all died.
Q:Been growing micro greens for several months, and have tried vermiculite, potting soil, peat with vermiculite and now am trying jiffy peat pellets (too hard to plant in those small pellets, so even if they work I won't use them again) A friend bought Sure Grow mats but they are expensive and I doubt they can be used twice. The potting soil was the worst - cutting them or gently pulling, however I harvested them I got a clump of dirt in the ends that was difficult to wash off without washing the greens down the drain. Any cheap or free materials suggestions would be appreciated! thanks!
Vermiculite comes from a naturally occurring mineral which expands when heated to 2500 degrees F. The mineral resembles mica. If you have seen mica, it has a shiny goldish color, and has many thin layers. If you look at vermiculite in a bag or mixed in potting soil, you will see flecks of shiny goldish particles, though most of the vermiculite is brownish in color. Chunks of vermiculite look like little accordions, which can be mashed flat between your fingers. Until 1990 vermiculite was mined from areas which were naturally contaminated with asbestos and used for building insulation and mixed in potting soils. Vermiculite is generally a filler in potting soil, which is sterile and hold some moisture. A potting soil containing a lot of vermiculite can develop a slime layer on the soil surface over time, which blocks air movement into the soil, and usually exacerbates algae growth on the soil surface. Perlite is a completely different mineral. It is a volcanic rock, which is grey naturally, but is washed to become white. Perlite holds very little water and is often used in potting soil to increase aeration. Historically it contained flourine which was slightly toxic to some plants. Modern supplies do not contain the flourine, but because flourine is easily removed by flushing the perlite with water, it is still a good idea to do so if you are using perilite by itself for some purpose, for example using moist perlite to vernalize seeds which require a cold treatment prior to germination.
Q:I need vermiculite for my incubator for my leopard geckos eggs. Where can I buy some? Also, is there any substitute? Like anything I can use other than vermiculite? Thanks!!
Sure. I would.
Q:i saw on the internet dat i should use 5 - 6 inches of a mix of something and something, i 4got wat its is and i also have a question dat people tell me i shouldnt buy soil with chemicals or pesticides, wer can i buy dis? can u gimme a picture of wat it looks
I've used spaghnum peat moss from Home Depot for years. It looks just like dirt. I have some burrowing tarantulas which I use the spaghnum mixed with sand. I moistened it slightly, and packed it down real well. My tarantulas have dug some pretty nice burrows. I can see them through the glass.
Q:I am trying to propagate oleander from cuttings, but after a week no roots are visible. I used the newest growth on the plants and cut the leaves short. The cuttings are in water and the lowest sets of leaves were removed so that the nodes are in the water. They have been kept indoors in a spot that gets some indirect light. Should I have roots growing already? Also, is there a better way of doing this?
Put in soil with vermiculite and/or sand. Start over. Dip in rooting hormone and put in soil. 3 tall cuttings of new growth are best. It could take a year on some plants to grow roots. Be sure the soil you use is sterile so nothing in it will cause rot.
Q:I am putting together 2 elevated gardens for a nursing home. total square feet of soil needed 12 cubic ft. 1: having trouble with the math. how many quarts needed? how many pounds needed? products are marketed with either quarts or pounds. trying to convert via google not helpful. Would like the most organic setup possible. Been reading about fertilizer, compost, soil, other buzz words i do not understand. Want ideal, organic growing conditions.garden will be set up outside. would like to grow flowers and foods. nothing chosen, yet. am asking for specific recommendations such as ratios for compost, soil, which to put on top, bottom, etc. links to products, specifically amazon, GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.
It will take a little extra effort. The main problem you will have is filling up the tire. You will need an air compressor strong enough to force fill the tire. If air doesn't enter the tire fast enough, the tire beads will not spread to make a seal around the wheel. Then the compressor has to be strong enough to pop the bead. It cannot be done with a hand pump or Co2 cartridges.
