- Yes it is bad to tap on tile period! It can ruin the tile floor and damage your shoes. Tile is a very slippery surface too when exposed to metal taps (especially Tel Tones). You don't want to fall and injure yourself. If I were you, I would stop by home depot or a similar store and get a square sheet of plywood to dance on. If you aren't able to do that, you can step outside on even concrete (not concrete with jagged edges, smooth concrete) and that will help create traction, and give you a nice tap sound quality. - Q:A few tiles in my building flat give a cracking noise when i step on them.Upon inspection i found that the tiles make cracking sound even when i press them with my hands but requires some strength.There is a small airgap in a few joints but the gap is very small.The tiles were installed almost 15 years ago and i dont know how old the building is but is considered an earthquake proof structure.The cracking sound is sometimes even for as long as 1-2 seconds when standing on it.So is it a lose tile or a foundation crack?
- It sounds like the tiles has become loose. There is a chance that the subfloor may be loose as well depending upon what it is made out of and how it was installed. Wood subfloors can become loose if they are nearly nailed down and not screwed down. The best thing to do at this point is to take up the floor and inspect any problems with the subfloor and make any repairs. Then install new tile. If you want to save a few bucks you can take up just the ones that are loose and install new tiles that look best in their place.
- Q:We currently have carpet throughout our house, but due to having dogs, we hate the carpet. While hardwood or laminate seems the logical choice, tile would hold up much better to their toe nails. My concern is how having tile throughout the entire house (even in the living room, computer room, bedrooms, etc) would look. I know it is done sometimes, but I just can't picture it in my mind. - Well its totally up to you but in my experience tile in every room is cold and not very inviting. Also we made the mistake of ripping up the carpet in our house so we could refinish the hardwoods underneath...bad idea. The floors were ruined and unsalvageable and and we found out our foundation was not suitable for laying laminate or tiles because it was raised in the middle of the house and sloped towards the edges. So seeing as we didn't have the money to lay carpet (we were going to lay the tiles or laminate ourselves) we have had a bare floor for over a year. If you (like us) have dogs that shed. The hair will be a daily nuisance. Between our two dogs and two cats there is hair blowing around the house constantly...which is not good especially when it ends up in the kitchen where your food is. Also we didn't realize how much the dogs preferred the soft carpet but as soon as we got an area rug for under our dining table they sleep there or on their dog pillow all the time and hate being on the hard floors. If you do decide to do tile make sure your floors do not give. My parents found out the hard way. Last year we laid their tile in their kitchen...we told them the floor had some give and that if we went ahead the grout may break out...after re-grouting twice and getting ready to try (hopelessly) again they finally realized that we were right. A few rooms are not as bad as the whole house. Hope this helps. Oh and keep your dogs nails clipped and that will cut down on snagging....if when walking through the house on hard floors and you hear them clicking they need to be trimmed if possible.

- Toffy's okorder /... Basically, you'll need to get the tile very clean, paint in several coats and then seal it with a good urethane. You need to be cautious about floors that will consistently get wet which would cause you problems with the paint and urethane. Also, if you paint and seal your floor I would treat it more like a wood floor as far as cleaning is concerned since you're now just going to be cleaning a urethane surface. Lastly, can I offer some free advice? Once you start painting that floor there is no turning back. It would be almost impossible to remove the paint if you don't like the way it looks and you would probably just have to rip the flooor out or put another flooring over the top of it as Toffy mentioned. If I was thinking about doing this, I would get some similar tiles to what you have and just lay them on a piece of plywood in the garage and do a quick grout job. It doesn't have to be perfect. I would do some testing with paint and urethane to see how it looks and how well it will hold up to wear.

- This is going to be messy. Usually the tiles will break when removing them, if they were properly installed in the first place. Some tile may not break but the mastic will stick to either the tile or backer board. The mastic must be scraped off. Over all it would be simpler to just demo the old tile and start over.

- vinyl tiles? or ceramic tiles. The answer is yes. You would have to prepare the floor and buy the materials.It can be done. Get a professional to do it. The sides and edges can get iffy and you need a special saw for the tiles, it is not easy but the pros can do it really fast and even,as it is pretty hard to just get the floor prepared. Tile looking floor panels are faster to put in than ceramic tiles..
