- Q:Hi,We put porcelain tiles on our kitchen floor.Unfortunately the contractor did not do a great job. He did not clean it properly and now the grout is all over the tiles. its been 1 month the they put the tiles. How can I take grout off the tiles? I got a grout cleaner from Home depot but its not working as it should be. Please advise
- The cleaner is probably working but whatever you use you have to do it over and over again.
- Q:I am purchasing a home and need to change the flooring before moving in. It is a 1500 sq foot house including garage, laundry room etc. I have already picked out carpet for the 3 bedrooms but am trying to decide on laminate wood floors or tile? It would be in the rest of the house including hallway, living room, and kitchen. I have heard tile floors are great, yet hard to clean, and hurt people‘s legs. I haven‘t heard too much about the laminate floors.Any opinions, suggestions, stories?? I would really appreciate it!
- Quality laminate is a good way to go. Although you can get a good tile for the same price as a good laminate, the tile labor per s/f is about double and you ll most likely need a backer board ( unless your on slab completely) this is about the same price for s/f as a laminate. Which makes tile up to 3xs the cost of good laminate. I personally favor tile since thats the bulk of my trade for 20 years but with that amount 0f s/f to do I d do laminate because of the ease of cleaning.Dust mopping with a spray mist ( NO mopping) is very easy. So if you have kids, dogs or don t want the extra cleaning , a good laminate is the way to go. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q:so i bought tile but not the bull nose end pieces cause they did not have them for that tile. I tiled all the way out to the edge of the counter and now need a way to finish the edge. I have seen wood edges but what is this called and how do you do it? does it butt up against the tile of does it go over? is a wet tile saw supposed to leave ugly, chipped edges? bought a Brand new blade and it did not help.
- The are several types of wood counter edges . Each will fit flat up to the edge of the tile, There is one type that you can get at most home improvement centers that do go up and over the edge of the tile. One other possibility is the metal or plastic edging. This is usually installed on the top tile and its over hung and you put another pc of tile on the edge. You might be able to use a decorative strip of tile on the edge if you can find one that is the same width as you need. Some one mentioned the V type ceramic trim pc, these need to be put on during installation since they partially set on the top of the counter. As far as a saw blade, new blades are not supposed to chip tile so theres a couple of reasons why this may occur. The blade was on back wards, a bearing was going out in the saw itself and causing a wobble. Chip in the blade itself so minor you can t see it. The type of blade. Did you get a segmented blade or a continuous rim type? I ve never liked the segmented blades, can cause chipping on some types of tiles or if you pushed it through to fast. - Q:I am building a deck outside my living room am#92;nd the dimensions are 8‘ wide by 24‘ long.It is 14‘ up at the highest point as I am on a hill. I‘m using 2 by 6 joists with 2 by 12 headers. Here is what I want to do: someone told me to use a 1/4 in slope over 8 ft. for water run off. I want to tile the deck. Iwant to know what size plywood I should use and if there is some kind of waterproof fibreboard I can use as a base for the tile in lieu of laying down rubber for the base. I dont want sand or pitch due to the weight factor. Is there something fairly lightweight and waterproof suitable for a base for the tile? If so what is it called? and where can i get it? Thanks.
- Use treated 3/4 inch thick plywood that comes in size 8' x 4'.Then after thats on put contractor grade plastic paper probably 8mill thick;thicker plastic the better.When you put this over the plywood you still have to put the cement board on for the tile to adhere to.All this can be purchased at your lumber store,Home Depot or Lowes,etc..To help keep moisture from getting under neath..3M sells a under coat spray paint in the can for cars;you can spray all the wood that you see under the deck when finished(buy at auto parts store).

- Some tiles are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Others aren't. Check with the place you bought them from to find out. If not, they will rot and deterioriate quickly.

- Porcelain or ceramic tiles work great in a kitchen. You're better going to your local flooring contractor than big box stores- you'll save on installation too. Just do an internet search for tile installation in your area. If you get tile for your kitchen, make sure you get the grout lines sealed, or you will end up with gray/black grout, and it's not something that can always be fixed without replacing the grout. It may cost a bit extra, but you will regret not doing it!

- Hello, I assume your question is trying to distinguish the differences in the companies or the difference between ceramic and granite tiles? lol, if its regarding difference between ceramic and granite tiles I can give a little insight: ceramic tiles are usually cheaper and maybe weigh about 1/5th of the weight of granite. Granite is very hard to cut, since it is stone. Its harder to cut granite than it is to cut marble per say. Granite will last a whole lot longer and won't scuff up or crack if you drop something on it, like ceramic tile would. You have pro's and cons with both products. I have replaced floors using both tiles and although the granite tiles look better and are more classic looking, the ceramic tile is much easier to put down. Cost comparison on regular granite in the state of Georgia from Floor Decor runs about $2.00 sq foot. Where as in ceramic tile ranges from about .75 to 2.50 per foot depending on style etc... Hope this helps you with your question. As far as the two different companies I am not familiar with them. Best of luck!
- Q:I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? In otherwords: in total, how much would I pay to have the entire apartment tiled in ceramic vs. vinyl? Please note I am not a DIY person AT ALL so approximate labor prices are crucial. Thanks!
- vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape,you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day,whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........

- i would not invest alot of money in this type of repair job , but i have done a a few similar jobs like it using a waterproof caulk or a basic construction addhesive like liquid nails.let walls dry overnight then set with caulk or addhesive and let dry about 4 or 5 hours. drying times are usually listed on the adhesive tubes.
