Q:Ceramic tile floor?
If the floor is concrete, remove the existing floor covering. Use thin-set, not mortar and lay the new tile. Begin in the center of the floor to make sure the borders come out even. Remove the toilet. It makes for an easier job. If the floor is wood, use hardi-backer or wonder board as an underlayment. Then set the tile.
Q:tiling over vinyl?
No,you cant do that .Vinyl must br removed first, you cant tile over hard wood floor either. If removing the vinyl is too difficult, you can just leave it down and use cement boards over it.You can get them at any home improvement stores, they come in 4x5 sheets, and are screwed with dry wall screws into the wood floor. They are designed for that purpose, and pretty easy to work with, and cut,as you only need to score it with a utility knife and bend to brake,.
Q:Back splash - do we seal before travertine tile is put on the wall?
How dare you do that to your wall... The seal is an endangered species!!
Q:Sanding parquet floor tiles, advice please.?
First okorder.com/ wood finish. It ain't cheap but you will be able to add new coats of finish later on without having to completely refinish the whole floor. You can rent a 'square sander' from Home Depot for abut $40 a day. It uses 4 six inch disk type sand paper. It doesn't dig in when started which allows a first time DIY person to do a good job. You move it around by putting pressure on the handle, real easy to use. Takes longer than a belt sander but you won't make mistakes. Make sure when you rent it that you get different size paper AND that they will stick (like velcro) to the sander unit face. You don't want to get home, start to use it and the sand paper disks fall off!! Had that happen with one. If you have a large floor to do rent the sander around 3 pm. You get 24 hours so you can sand from 3-11pm, go to bed, then start over in the morning. Otherwise you have to work from morning to evening. Makes for a long day.
Q:(geometry) how many tiles....?
Ency is of course correct but doesn't understand that this section is called Homework Help for a reason. This is not a quiz question where you are showing how smart you are by getting the correct answer. The asker needs to know how to calculate it. In that respect Ency's answer is as much use as a plastic teabag! Ok there are 12 inches in a foot. Therefore placing the 12 inch edge down the 12 foot side, means that 12 tiles are required to form each row. Then 15 feet converts to 15 * 12 = 180 inches. Therefore as the other edge of the tile is 10 inches, 180 / 10 = 18 columns Therefore you require 12 * 18 tiles = 216 Answer 216 tiles
Q:Can we remove dried cement from surface of tiles?
Try fine grade wire wool. Use it gently so you don't damage the surface of the tiles. Another point to remember is to keep all pets away from the area while you are working. My dog got some fine grain plaster in his eye that caused temporary blindness and £140.00 emergency vet's bill. Best wishes from Sue
Q:Ceramic,Clay And Porcelin Tile Differences?
Porcelain okorder.com/
Q:When to use sheetrock for tile?
You never use a sheetrock to do tile. Only as a normal wall covering to be painted in a non wet area such as a back splash or a wainscot. Then that you can tile over. You may have used a product ( or one similar) called Denshield. This is a 1/2 special backer board you can use on floors and you work with it just like a sheet rock. because it was a light weight fiberglass impregnated gypsum board. Just like the 1/2 cement board you could use it on floors and wall where moisture is present and you installed it in a thinset bed of mortar prior to nailing it down. Sheet rock is a general term for dry wall, used for regular walls to be painted. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:Tearing up carpet, tile entire house?
I advise using ceramic tile rather then regular tile. It costs a little more, but it's worth every penny. Also, you'll be really pleased in the end if you choose a mingle of darker earth tones. We removed all the carpet from our home and had ceramic tile put in. My spouse chose a gray-cement tile for the upstairs. I chose the mingled earth tones for the downstairs. Cleaning these tiles is like night and day. Everything shows up on the gray. Whereas the downstairs tiles have never appeared to be dirty even when they are sometimes. I think we paid between $1.50 and $1.75 per tile at an outlet store. Don't let people tell you that shouldn't buy tile that is no longer being produced, since if one breaks you won't be able to replace it. All we did was buy more than we needed. The extra box remains unused because none of our tiles have ever chipped or broken.
Q:Simple way to lay ceramic tile?
I am not sure but i know you can learn on line or at a store.
