- Q:I‘m getting some of my house tiled and would like to know if I am getting ripped off or not. It is going to be approximalte 600 sq ft with 2 upstairs bathrooms. The installer gave me a quote of $2400 to lay the tile (straight or diagonal, whichever I want). I will have to buy the tile and other materials on my own. The tile is going to be 18x18. The price includes ripping out the carpet and ripping out the tile that is already in the kitchen that will be replaced as well as the tile in the upstairs baths. Also included will be haul away of all the trash. Is this a good price or not?
- A porcelain tile is decorative and glazed only on the outside. If you were to see a cross section, you would find only a small decorative veneer sorta surface on the exposed side. The rest of the tile has a dirt colour. In a ceramic tile, the colour is uniform throughout the tile. Practically, say if a prcelain tile gets chipped, you will see the dirt colour where it's chipped. In a ceramic one, it would not be such a stark difference. By the way, many mugs and cups we use for beverages, are made of ceramic. The not so personal stuff like vases could be made of porcelain. Got it ?
- Q:Our house was built in 1925. My husband is removing our bathroom floor tiles that haven‘t been touched since then...we had only vinyl tiles on top of the old. He discovered these tiles are extremely difficult to take out they are very hard tiles under the vinyl we have now. - Old tile can have asbestos. The ONLY way to know is to take a piece of each with glue/mastic on the back to a local lab to have it tested. You can not determine absolutely or not if asbestos is present by size, color, or texture. If he has already thrown it away, all you can do is wet clean the entire area and move on. If you can afford it, hiring an asbestos removal company to do it would be better or hire an asbestos consultant to checkk the area.
- Q:I am tiling my kitchen and My house was a prefab. and OLD. The plywood used was 1/2 (I measured it). what thickness of backboard/cement board should I use for under the tile and on top of the plywood? I was thinking 1/2 backerboard/cement board so there is 1 of subfloor under the tile. Do you think this is enough? Also, I am tiling around my cabinets, what do I do about the dishwasher? Do I tile around it? If I tile under it, it won‘t fit in the spot then. I was going to tile around it... I do have room to tile under the fridge though. There is space above.
- I am a tile repairman specialist. Use 1/2 thick backer board. the trick is that you install it with the cement screws that are made for that backer board. Never use dry wall screws. Remove the stove and refrigerator and tile by those areas. Do not tile under the dish washer, you may not be able to remove it at a later date. Tile up to the dish washer's removal panel, don't go pass it. Use a modified thinset mortar to tile your kitchen floor because of the high traffic. Glue will not support the floor and your tiles may crack in time.

- If you have any loose pcs not yet installed the backs can give me clues as to what it is. Along with the year it was originally installed ( approx) and the exact size of the tile.. Any thing over 8/10 years old you may as well look for some thing close in the exact size. Beyond that your looking at reclaimed tile discount outlets looking for dropped tile lines. There is a few places that specialize in buying and selling of dropped lines of tiles. They change and discontinue tiles every 7/10 years to keep up with changing styles and colors patterns. - Tile is much better suited for floors. It is harder and less likely to stain or scratch. Granite is the next best choice because it is harder than marble and less porous and likely to stain. Marble is the softer and most likely to stain. The first floor of our current house is all ceramic tile.
- Q:My friend‘s bathroom floor is light-colored marble tile. His new navy blue shower mat bled navy dye and stained the tile. It‘s pretty soaked into the tile and won‘t wipe off. Is it a lost cause to try to remove it, or does anyone have any ideas to get the stain out? Thanks a lot!

- Go to a Tile Store. They now have Ceramic Tile which can be put on top of other flooring as long as the floor is level. Some of these Tiles can be snapped together. No Mud, no Grout.They look wonderful.
- Q:Yesterday I bought tile from menards and they are sticky on the backs of them, my question is do I need to use other glue as well? If so what kind of glue?
- These tiles are self sttick, so no other glue is needed. However, the surface of the floor must be clean, dry, and smooth for the tile job to last. Be sure to follow installation instructions carefully. Personally, anywhere water is involved, (bath, kitchen, laundry,) the less joints that water can penetrate, is the better solution. Self stick tiles will no hold up to an overflowing sink or toilet.
- Q:how I can install ceramic tile on a wall and what tools do I need to do so? Any other tip that I should know about it to do a good job would be appreciated.
- Okay, the gory details are too numerous to detail here. Basically, you need: notched trowel for your tile size, grout float, wet saw/tile cutter, tile cleaning sponge, blue painter's tape, Mastic/thiinset, and grout. The grout should be unsanded for gaps between tiles less than 1/8. For gaps 1/8 or greater, use sanded grout. Thinset works well but is a pain in the b*tt to mix and has a short working time. I recommend you use Mastic or a similar product. You will have to remove all outlet and light switch wall plates as well as loosening the screws on all outlets and switches so you can install the tile underneath them. Otherwise, your switches and outlets will be recessed behind the wall plates and will look terrible. Of course, remove power at your fuse panel/breaker panel to each switch and outlet you work on before you do any of this. You will need to rough up your wall so that it has a good tooth for the Mastic to adhere to. I recommend either 60 grit sandpaper or a wire wheel in a drill. Rough it up in a horizontal direction. This will reduce the chance of tile droop (sliding down) after installation. Mark the boundaries of your backsplash with blue painter's tape to prevent Excess Mastic/grout from getting onto the painted part of your wall. Do a dry layout first, of your backsplash to check its look before you put it up. Now's the time to make any last-minute changes. Work from the bottom up. Use spacers between tiles. Cut tiles to fit around outlets, switches, and any other wall obstructions. Clean up any excess Mastic from between tiles, otherwise there won't be room for the grout. Let dry 24 hours before grouting. Use the float for grouting. Push the grout into the spaces between tiles. Don't worry about getting grout on the tiles. This will be cleaned up. Wait about fifteen minutes, then with a damp, clean sponge, wipe away the excess grout. That's about it. Check with other tile professionals and get their tips and advice as well.
