Q:We want to pull out our carpeting and use self stick linoleum tiles. What do we need to know?: Consider the color options, cost per tile and the conditions that the tile was designed for. Some tiles have adhesive that will work in wet environments, like the bathroom or kitchen while others do not hold up as well. Figure out the rough area of the floor you want to cover and buy about 1/4 more. When you buy, be sure to get tiles from the same manufacturers batch to ensure that the tile color is consistent. This is why you want to have some extra for future repairs too. If the floor is uneven you will need to level it by applying a floor leveling patch - it's kind of like putty or spackle for your floor. Instructions for installing the tiles will be included with them and are pretty straight forward. Just make sure you set your first row so that it is straight and even so the rest will be too. The edges take the longest but are actually not too bad. Tiles can be cut with a utility knife.

Q:I‘ve seen on many different DIY shows that you can get used tiles that are still in good condition (from a certain place, I just can‘t seem to remember the word) to use in your projects.: Most tile stores throw out tiles every week. They throw out sample boards and broken tiles and generally you can go dumpster diving and pick up quite a few. Some stores will give them to you if you ask. I used to work at a tile store and we threw out tons of tiles all the time. The large stores like Home Depot sometimes have rules that they won't give anything broken away or even sell it but it's worth asking because they're all different. You may be able to find a Habitat Re-Store that has some as well. When they tear out old houses they often recycle rather than toss the items.

Q:I have a 15x15 tile that is on the floor in front of a gas fireplace (never been used) that has a hairline crack in it. The tile is one of 4 on the floor and matches 8 others that ring the face of the gas fireplace, the bathrooms and the kitchen. I cannot find the same tile to replace it. There is no elevation difference across the crack.Is there a method to fill the hairline crack so it doesn‘t stand out like a sore thumb?: If you must fix the crack, go to a stone fabrication company, they have a product called akimi that can be colored to match the tile and will harden when mixed with a hardner. The only problem is that tile does not crack unless the tile is not bonded or the substrate moves, so your one tile may be the first of many to crack. Take a broom handle and tap the tile, the cracked one might have a hollow sound, if it does, it is not bonded well to the floor. tap the others to see if you have other problems.

Q:would like my cory tile to shine without being slippery. What products work best without streaking like crazy ??: Quarry tile is not meant to shine . It s quality as a tile is its slip resistance. This is why its spect out in the use in restaurants and bar areas where water is present a lot. There are cleaners that you use to keep it clean but adding a product to make it shine will take away its main anti slip properties and make is slippery when wet.. Q:To any DIY‘ers out there!My kitchen has a white tile backsplash and these decorative fruit motifs here and there.
