- Q:i am getting my kitchen done over in 2 weeks cost is not a factor i cant decide to do tiles or harwood flooring which is better for the kitchen. i have two kids 2 and 5
- I am a kitchen designer and have seen so many clients go through this debate :) The problem is that every type of floor has its advantages and disadvantages. A lot of times, it really comes down to considering your lifestyle and what will be easiest for you. Tile is very durable, but will crack with time. As the house settles and the floor becomes uneven, there will be higher risk of cracking. Also if you drop something heavy on it. It is very easy to mop clean, but you do have to consider grout issues. The grout can be tough to clean if you choose a lighter color. Grout is also porous, so if you are worried about bacteria, you will have to keep up with sealing it. Hardwood is also durable, but you must be careful of water damage. If you spill water on it or have a leak under the sink, get it cleaned up as soon as you can. I don't think that means you have to mop up spills the second they hit the floor, but if there's an area in the kitchen that gets splashed a lot, you'll see the damage with time. Wood also needs to be refinished now and again, but not so frequently that it will stop you from purchasing it. There are also some really nice vinyl floors out there that look a lot like tile but are not as cold, hard and prone to cracking. However, if you drop a sharp knife on it or if a child wears soccer cleats around the kitchen, you'll see dents and punctures :) Some laminate flooring (like the brand name Pergo) have flooring that looks either like wood or tile. These floors are durable, but you'll have to beware water damage, just like with wood. This flooring is easy to install and take out. It also doesn't need to be refinished like hardwood. It's a lot to take in, but my advice is to consider the pros and cons of each, then think of your lifestyle and who lives in your house, then make a decision based on that. Good luck!

- Providing the tile you are discribing is a fired material, you can't hurt it with almost any chemical. Think of the glazed top of the tile as being a glass surface. An exception might be if the glaze has craze lines in the surface. Colors from paint spatters can find their way into these cracks and are almost impossible to get out. SO test the chemical in a small area first. Some paints will not be easily effected by thinners or mineral spirits .you may have to try Turpentine or equal. Acetone is stronger yet. It's the base for fingernail polish remover with a little oil smell good added. A small razor blade paint scraper is also handy. When using a razor make sure first that it dosn't leave a silver like scratch mark on the surface. This is the information that I found at the site below. I bought big bottles of cheap fingernail polish remover. Worked like a charm. I also used the finest grade of steel wool. And I used a plastic scraper so as not to scratch the surface. - If these tiles are already installed I think you are out of luck for any long term fix. Ceramic tile glaze is fired onto the tiles in a kiln at very high heat. The firing makes the glaze and tile bond in a way that fillers, puttys, or paint cannot achieve. If your tile is that worn, it is possible that you have the wrong grade of tile for the situation where it is being worn so much. You may have earned yourself a new tile shower, floor, countertop, whatever....
- Q:If you were going to tile an entire room would you start from the walls or floor? The room is only small 12m walls amp; 4m floor amp; is a basic toilet amp; basin. There are no border tiles amp; no fllor to wall tiles.

- I have not yet run across a glass tile that is rated for use on a kitchen counter top. They will scratch too easily for use on a kitchen counter, and are more for a wall application. Ceramic is ok for a counter top, but does not usually come in a mosaic. Ther are a few though. Maybe you are making your own mosaic? Ceramic would be the easiest to work with. If it has a shiney finish though, it will show scratches with wear. Porcelain comes in mosaic sheets and is very durable. I personally wouldn't want a mosaic countertop because it would be uneaven, and have lots of grout. But if you are sure that's what you want, be sure to buy grout sealer, and use the correct cleaners so that sealer stays on! Or grout with an epoxy grout, it won't stain. It is hard to work with though.
