it depends mainly on the gaskets you are using whether or not they are paper type gaskets or rubber type gaskets or cork type some cars have only sealant and no gaskets most rubber gaskets don't need sealant some install it anyway for extra protection but to much sealant it could clog your cooling system if they are paper type gaskets a little sealant is added protection some mechanics put sealant on the gasket simply to hold it in place during the install some gaskets require sealant and a specific one at that there are many different types of sealant keep in mind if your gasket manufacture requires sealants to install its would be listed on the box it arrives in for the pre installation guides make sure you get the one they say also all sealant that dry some are wet sealants and never dry, keep in mine that if the sealant requires dry time after install you follow those guide lines otherwise it will leak keep in mind also that the water pump housing bolts have a specific install and tightening and torque down for that type of gaskets like 15 foot pounds on the bolts for cork type gaskets if you crank the bolts down to tight its going to split the gaskets and your back to square one replacing it again

Q:Today I was installing a new water pump on my 1999 grand Prix. When tightening the bolts one of them snapped off. Now the pump leaks from that broken bolt. I was wondering if I would be able to stop the leak using some sort of sealant or would I have to take the car in to get the bolt removed?

You will need to remove the water pump and see how far down the bolt broke. You may be able to get hold of the bolt with vice grips and get it out. Worse case you will have to drill it out and re-cut the thread or use a bolt extraction tool, you simply drill a hole smaller than the bolt and the extraction tool turns the opposite way to the bolt thread and as it gets tight its meant to loosen the bolt in question. I have done this many times and it dose not always work so you may need a professional to do it.

This is a new one to me! All water pumps have a weep hole in front of the water pump bearing to alert mechanics and owners the water pump needs replacing. The pressure inside a cooling system is controlled by the pressure cap on the radiator or coolant recovery tank. Many cars have the pressure cap now directly on the reserve coolant recovery tank. Ford is an example. As pressure builds when the coolant gets hot the relief spring inside the radiator cap allows coolant to pass to the coolant recovery tank @ atmospheric pressure if the pressure cap is located directly on the radiator. As coolant cools a small plunger in the center of the radiator cap opens and coolant returns to the motor and radiator. The whole idea is to completely eliminate air bubbles inside the cooling system. I'd have to actually see this in a Chrysler shop manual as you could be loosing coolant and have no idea where or why. What you're explaining to us doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Someone is whistling sweet nothings in your ear.

No! The belt is squeaky because It needs to be replaced! And you're water pump is its own separate problem!

If your talking about the water pump for a car it doesn't have any pumps those would be the radiator pumps that are connected to the water pump and transmission which keeps the radiator and transmission at a temperature that keeps the vehicle from over heating. If you have a overheating car and a mechanic told you your water pump has a leak then sorry you would have to replace the water pump but just don't go to a popular mechanic for that because it can get really expensive do your research and find you someone with a garage it cheaper because the part itself is not that expensive it putting it in that cost lol. I don't know why, but the water pump costs between $125 and $160. That seems a little high. It probably retails for $186. Under normal conditions, you just get things out of the way, unbolt the old pump, clean it up and put the new one in. The problem is the other stuff that gets in the way. I'm just estimating the job will take 5-8 hours. Just multiply times the labor rate in your area. Don't forget the anti-freeze when you're done.

Q:and it still runs about every 1/2 hr even if you are not using water. I have no leaks from the pump thought the house so I think the problem is between the house and the well. I can't hear or see any leaks in the elbows in the well. I tried to pull the foot valve up but can't get it out. I replaced the pump cause it was worn out and it was running every 15 min. Do I need to set the pressure on the new one it cuts off at 42 and on at 20 psi and what else could cause it to run when it shouldn't? Sounds like foot valve to me is not seating properly and you wouldn't hear the leak under water level guess your tank has enough air gap top of tank and water level if that is insufficient pump will also short cycle should have a valve stem with internal bladder inside of tank if it is similar to my old tank. Your pressure is same as my old one and it was fine.
