Jeez. It all depends on where you are, the weather, what plants you are growing, and what pests you have. A lot of bugs in the garden are beneficial. Some are not. There are a lot of home remedies for bugs out there, but you need to know what type of bug it is. Some can be removed by hand, some by spraying with soapy water, some by spraying with pressurised water... it all depends. There's also biological controls available like encarsia and ladybugs. Next time, pick a plant with a pest and describe the problems. You'll get a better answer.

Q:I have been doing lots of homemade bread making, home brewing, and home gardening recently and realized that I could try growing rye. Does anyone have experience with this? Does it seem worth it for ~400-500 sq ft? Will people think I'm just neglecting my lawn? Vegetable gardens are common, but I don't know about grain gardens. I'm located in the suburbs of Minneapolis.

Neighbors would just be jealous that they weren't doing with they felt like doing.It won't look like an unkempt yard. It'll look like a farmer's field in miniature. A handmill could do 30 lbs and you'd get the satisfaction of growing your own.

They have some good ones (such as by Sunset Press, Rodale Press, and Better Homes and Gardens) just inside the front entrance to hardware giants like Lowe's and Home Depot. There is one by Ortho for water gardening that I just love! I bought it at either a Borders, Barnes and Nobel or Walden Books. Just look for the Gardening section, find an easy chair, and you'll be there for awhile. Too, sometimes the bigger nurseries send out colorful booklets in the Spring to their former customers or the ones on their mailing list. Perhaps you can pick up one of these. They're great for quick identification of various plants plus info as to individual sun/shade requirements, height and spread, price, etc.

I'm not very into gardening so I have no idea where to begin to buy this stuff. Could I even buy the supplies before christmas now? What stores could I buy these at?

Q:Hello, My fiance and I are looking for a secluded and/ or garden venue for our wedding next year. It is set to be on a SUNDAY evening Between the weeks of April 16th and May 16th. I do not know of any place specific but I can give you some suggestions of places to check. First of all check with your department of Parks and Recreation for your city and your surrounding cities. Many parks have lovely gardens as well as community centers which have nice big kitchens. Also check to see if there are any tea houses or restaurants that have gardens and a room you can use for your reception..this may cost you more because of the food...but it doesn't hurt to ask, and see if it fits the budget. Are there are botanical gardens in your area...check with them, and what about any historical homes or gardens?? Check at your local library for some info....also some libraries have gardens....Think outside the box. Good Luck!

Q:We are building a new home and are acting as our own contractors. We are having cabinets, granite, wood floors and tile brought in from other stores but need faucets, sinks, toilets ect.. Home Depot used to do a 10% discount card but neither them nor Lowes does this anymore. Anybody have any ideas as far as where to go to get alot of things where they might give a dicount? How is Home Deot and Lowes quality?

I would call a plumbing supplier. Tell them you want to buy all of your fixtures and ask if they will give you a discount on buying everything for your house from them. Also, quality of fixtures is not found in the store but in the brand. Koeler is your top of the line stuff, but it is expensive! Moen is standard for faucets and has a life time guarantee. Peerless is also a good name for faucets and American Standard is a good name for your ceramic fixtures.
