Q:I am babysitting two children this summer, ages 3 and 6. I don't have transportation available to me, and their home is not within walking distance of anything. In brainstorming ideas of what to do, I thought of doing a garden with them. However, their parents rent a home and don't have a very large yard, so we can't have one in the ground. What are some plants that can handle living and producing in pots?I want to do veggies or flowers that can be cut- things that they can take pride in having grown.Help????? My thumb is more black than green...
Hm... Pretty much any garden plant can be grown in a pot, but try to stay away from anything that needs tons of water, like roses, tomatoes, stuff like that, unless you're home often enough to water them every day. For flowers, just anything that fits the sort of sun that the garden gets. Also, you need make sure that what you get does well in your zone, so these will sort of be general suggestions. For flowers, geraniums and other annuals usually do well in pots. If you want cutflowers, do bulbs like tulips, lillies, daff's. They are very easy and rewarding. You can also do herbs that they can use when they cook, like basil, oregano, parsely. For fruit and veggies... If you buy tomatoes, get a bush type (Determinate), so you don't have to stake it and prune it (unless you have the time and money for the stuff to do it) Kids like cherry tomatoes that are sweet. There are also cool novelty green, purple, and orange tomato varieties. You could also do strawberries or any native berries that grow well in your climate. Stick with things that are easy and grow fast, like bulbs, herbs, berries, and easy veggies. Good luck!
Q:What is the best kind of tobacco to buy for making tobacco water for pesticide for my home gardens. I bought a can of Grizzly natural Chewing tobacco becasue it was cheap, but is there a better brand to buy or are cigarette tobaccos better to use for pesticides? Also what is the best method of making it? I heard that just boiling in a pot of water and straining out the tobacco works well but is there a better way?
The brand with the fewest additives is the best. Redman is ok but a very straight forward pipe tobacco has less sugar and additives. Boiling or making suntea with it will be fine
Q:I have a small home garden. I planted some purple passion spinach. Its growing beautifully, and I have three plants. The problem is there are these little green caterpillars that are eating it all! I noticed it on a fee leaves a while ago but didn't mind a leaf here or there. But they are eating it all now. Today, I harvested leaves from the plants and I had to throw hlalf of them away!!! I picked all of the big leaves and removed all of the caterpillars (its growing in a container) and killed them, some I threw away with the leaves. What do I do? I really don't want to put a pesticide on my food. Is there an organic or home remedy I can use?? Also, they are not eating any of my other plants.
Hello Tazmen – so sorry to hear about your caterpillar problems. There are several products that you can use that are available at your local garden or home improvement center, including Sevin dust – which has a short pre-harvest interval required before eating. Check with the stores to see which brands of environmentally friendly and organic products that they carry –be sure to follow the instructions regarding product application and time to harvest. Ask about products with Neem oil and insecticidal soaps. Alternately you could get a “bird block” product – which is a fine mesh that allows the plant to grow but birds, rabbits, deer, and in your case caterpillars, would not be able to eat through. Your plants get all the sunlight and rain they need but the mesh stops any invasions. Best wishes on your garden!
Q:Hi,Ok well I want to start a garden this year and to also have a pond in the garden. Since we have 2 out door dogs were going to put a fence around it. I just want to know what are the best plants for moderate sun. Also we have rabbits and want to know if we can use their manure for fertilizer. Oh and we also want to grow vegetables.
Backyard. Garden's are a private space, I'd hate to have people snooping all the time O_o
Q:How to use urea in home gardening?
It's a source of nitrogen. If you've purchased a bag of it at a garden center, use it as instructed on the bag (mixing x cups or pounds into the soil per square foot). Urine is the source of urea, and if you have a toddler, diluting the potty chair's contents 10 to 1 with water, you can use if as a liquid fertilizer that is dilute enough that it won't burn your plants. I don't recommend using diluted urine for indoor plants.
Q:Is home aquaculture (e.g. small-scale tilapia production) a suitable hobby for both boys and girls?
