Q:My mom and I are growing some summer squash in our garden. All of the squash up untill this point have rotted and then eventually develop this white (yeast like) fuzz on them with black tips. Now we have three very nice and harvestable sized squash on the plant now. Are these healthy looking ones safe to eat?I'm worried my plant has some disease and I know nothing about gardening as this is my first year with a garden. I'm sure as long as they don't show any signs of rotting, odd coloration, mushiness etc they are fine to eat but you never know. Thanks for any help
The healthy-looking squash are safe to eat. Probably what was happening was the earlier squash blossoms weren't getting pollinated, so the little squash embryos rotted and fell from the plant. Female blossoms produce the squash, and a female blossom has a tiny squash embryo directly behind the blossom. A male blossom is just on a stem. If there are no male flowers on the plant, or their pollen isn't reaching the females, the little squash embryos cannot develop and mature, and they end up shriveling, rotting and falling from the plant. No big deal, you can pollinate the female blossoms yourself so long as there are some male blossoms also. Go out to the garden in the morning, while the pollen is still fresh. Find a male blossom and rub some of its pollen onto a Q-Tip or small paintbrush. Then transfer the pollen to a female blossom. This will pollinate the female blossom and its little squash will mature and be edible.

Q:I am growing hybrid corn and i went to go pick it and it was FILLED with worms!!!I checked all the corn (which is like 20 plants) and every single piece has ATLEAST 6 worms!is there anything i can put on the corn or soil or something to keep worms away? i have planted much more like tomatoes, raddishs, watermelon, butternut and crookneck sqaush and everything else is 100% perfect. we have a bunch of crab grass could that do anything with it?i'd also like to eat the corn so it must be safe.about 1h. west from Selma, Alabama (crumptonia)
You've got corn ear worm.........ick!! Mineral oil on each ear, getting inside the husks may help. Now that they have found the corn, they probably aren't interested in the natural Bt....bacillus thuringensis. Hand picking and dusting with Sevin may be all you can do now. (see below) Home Garden In the home garden there are quite a few varieties that show resistance to corn earworm damage, i.e., Country Gentleman, Stay Gold, Victory Golden, Silver Cross Bantam, and Silvergent. Check label for varietal limitation and precautions. Carbaryl (Sevin) is recommended for use in the home garden. Apply carbaryl 50% wettable powder 4 tablespoonfuls or carbaryl 80% wettable powder 2 1/2 tablespoons per gallon of water. Thoroughly wet the silks of all ears until harvest is completed. Dusts containing Sevin may also be used. They can be applied to the silks of each ear with a paint brush or hand duster.(www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/... www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/r11330091...
Q:My parents talked to this guy from Express Home Solutions that's based in Garden City, NY about help with modifying their home loan and such. They wanted me to research the company to make sure it wasn't any kind of scam set up before they did anything with them, but I can't find much. There seems to be another company with the same name out of Texas, but I don't know if they're the same people. Has anyone dealt with this company or heard anything about them? Any help would be great! Thanks.
I don't know anything about this company but when I Googled the name, the first site that comes up is Rip off report so I'd be leary. There are many scam companies out there right now who will take the money up front not do much for it. Your parents don't need to hire anyone to help modify their mortgage. It can be time-consuming because so many people are looking for modifications that the lenders are overwhelmed. Have your parents start here: makinghomeaffordable / You will see the warning right on the front page about these types of companies. Good luck to your folks.
Q:I see many of my friends and neighbors with their home gardens, and somedays it seems to me that they are not really saving much? But maybe there is something I am missing. Do you think home gardens are really worth all the time, energy and expense?
Yes of course, home gardens are the final decoration of the house breaking the corners and balancing the heaviness of the concrete other architectural works. Home gardens are also at present, a basic need to your home environment to make your perimeter cooler and living.
Q:I plan on starting a good sized garden where I will grow as many vegetables as I can. This will be to save money on groceries, eat healthier (since they'll all be just right there), and with whatever excess I'll take to the farmers market for other people to enjoy, while at the same time trying to pay for my garden investment! So I'm hoping in the following years the pay off will be saved money on groceries, learned a lot, got exercise, and maybe make a little supplemental funds on the side to pay for bills and such, but at first to pay for the garden itself....

The picture of the enchiladas is garnished with tomatoes and black olives and green onions. My cookbook is packed for a move and I need that recipe. Thank you in advance!

Q:Someone I know has a vegetable and fruit garden in his backyard. He used pesticides on his fruits and vegetables, however, he had been eating them for two months without washing them. Do you think he consumed a significant amount of pesticides to cause serious long-term health effects? This is a serious question, and the person concerned is very worried.Thank you for any insight you can offer.
Well, that depends on the ingredients of the pesticide used. Generally speaking, he should stop that from now onwards. If he feels that his conscious level is lowering or excessive salivation , then he should go to the emergency room immediately
Q:I have the sims 3 and I thought it would be cool to start a garden, but I'm not sure how to....
Get some seeds (or go to the store and buy the fruit or veggie) and start planting in your backyard. Is that what you're talking about? A home garden? Find an area on your property and start planting. I usually have big gardens. It would be cool if they'd make it so we can have greenhouses. You can go into your build tools if you want to make it look more like a garden. If you need to, take a gardening class which will give you some starter seeds and start planting and keep building your gardening skill so you can plant higher level stuff. I usually have one sim who's a master at fishing, cooking, and gardening and that way I don't have to buy food from the store. :D
