Q:why would you clean metal with steel wood?
Steel wool is a mild abrasive. I don't know what it is you are cleaning, but it is probably to remove any coating or oxidisation from the metal. Maybe you are using a metal for an electrode (perhaps a steel nail pushed into a lemon?).
Q:Galvanised Steel Questions?
Wipe the powder of and the rest should be safe, unless you stub your toe on the rusty metal.
Q:Can you use steel strings on a classical guitar?
NO ! NO! NO! Do not put steel strings on a classical guitar!! The increased tension can actually damage the guitar by causing the top to warp and can eventually pull the bridge right off of the guitar! I have seen it happen more than once! Ignore the other post, they are wrong! Classical guitars are designed to use nylon strings only!
Q:what steel anodizes well?
Steel doesn't anodize in the sense that aluminum and some other metals do. However, it can be heat-colored. The trick is to clean the surface first (it must be oxide free), then heat gently until the colors appear. These are called temper colors in steel. They are due to a thin adherent layer of oxide that forms and thickens as temperature is increased. They are quite temperature dependent. As the steel is heated, the first color to appear is pale yellow. This will progress through darker yellows, browns, purples, and blues as the temperature rises. Above blue, the oxide becomes the gray/black color you are apparently getting - this is the result of heating too fast and too hot. See the chart at the site below for colors in plain carbon steel. Note that the temperatures are pretty low - It all starts around 400 F and if you go above 600 F the show's all over.
Q:Magnet will not stick to stainless steel?
That's interesting that it caused deflection in the compass. A lot of stainless steels may be SLIGHTLY magnetic, because they have small amounts of ferrite or alpha-iron in them. Ferrite is one of the crystal phases of steel. It has a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure and it's responsible for the magnetism of ordinary steels. Adding certain elements like nickel, manganese, or molybdenum, changes the crystal structure of the steel to a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure, which is NOT magnetic. This crystal phase is known as Austenite or gamma-iron. However most iron alloys contain some impurities that may cause the steel to be not completely transformed into the FCC austenite phase, small areas remain as ferrite.
Q:What are the end uses of steel coil? galvanized steel coil?
Steel coil is the name given to thinner sheet steel when it is manufactured - it comes out of the machine and is formed into a coil for ease of handling storage and transportation. Thin sheet steel is used for plenty of stuff. It can be slit (cut) into thin strips as well as just cropped and used at one of the standard lengths x widths it leaves the mill. There is a big market for this material. It is used in many construction and engineering applications for things like ducting, boxes, gutters, down pipes, flashings, panels, car bodies etc., anything made of thin steel Galvanising is a flash coating of zinc which improves it's corrosion resitance. Cost wise it is a relatively cheap material. The chemical composition of steel varies, it is mostly iron but has various other elements added or present as impurities that change it's characteristics, depending on the end use. These additional elements can be selected to give better weld ability, hardness, tensile strength, corrosion resistance, flexibility and so on. In many applications excess of these chemicals is undesirable. For example sulphur and carbon are generally better at lower levels. The chemical composition data is contained in a material data sheet and expressed as a percentage of the chemical present and which gives the composition of a particular batch of steel, allowing it to be selected for particular applications and traced for quality assurance purposes. The list you have there shows presence and quantity of other elements in a particular batch of coil. The thickness is 0.23mm, quite thin.
Q:Can you WELD STEEL to ALUMINUM? How much heavier/stronger is STEEL?
Yes you can, but you really dont want to. Aluminum conducts heat better than steel so the weld would not cool evenly and would be brittle. You would be better off using a bracket or bolt straight on.
Q:Pipe screens: brass or stainless steel?
Stainless Steel Pipe Screens
Q:Stainless Steel Pots and Pans?
Stainless is great for many things but not so great for some others. Where you want sticking is when you saute meat. You want those crusty brown bits that when the pan is deglazed are the makings of a great sauce. Get yourself one or two non stick pans (preferably with a metal handle so it can go from stove top to oven). Use those where you wish to avoid sticking (like eggs / omelets, french toast or pancakes. Keep in mind that no one pan type is universally good for all types of cooking. My kitchen is mostly stocked with layered stainless steel. I have a few non-stick skillets, a carbon steel wok, a few cast iron skillets, an enameled cast iron dutch oven (le creuset), and a copper sauce pan. Each has its own use.
Q:truth of steel Sword making?
I am unsure of what the Truth of Steel is, but here is the Riddle of Steel (from Conan) Thulsa Doom: Yes! You know what it is, don't you boy? Shall I tell you? It's the least I can do. Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; a beautiful girl. Come to me, my child... Thulsa Doom: [coaxes the girl to jump to her death] Thulsa Doom: That is strength, boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart, I gave you this! Such a waste. Contemplate this on the tree of woe. Crucify him!
