Q:I'm trying to install a ceiling fan and I'm looking for some help given my home's wiring. I have a single light switch in the room, and here's what's coming out of the ceiling: 2 white wires, 2 black wires and a ground wire. It seems like a set of white and black originate from the same location (in both cases). My celing fan with light has a remote connection, so there's one black, one white and one ground wire coming from my fan to connect to the ceiling. Can someone let me know how to hook it up so the fan and light both work? Thanks in advance.
I hope you made notes of which wires were attached to the light you took down. Just wire the fan/light assembly in place of the light. One set of those wires is from the switch, the other is from power. You forgot to do that? OK, here's what I would do in this case. Get your self a 'Volt Stick'. This is a small probe that looks like a carpenters pencil that lights up when it is placed next to an energized wire. Best $20.00 you'll spend if your planning on doing anything with electrical wiring. Disconnect and spread the wires apart from each other. Use the Voltstick to find out which of the wires coming from the ceiling is 'hot' (supplying power to the light). Mark this wire and turn off the breaker. This should be paired with one of the white wires, mark that one as well. This is your return wire. The other two should be to the switch. Test this by hooking the black source wire to the white switch wire. Now turn the breaker on. If the breaker doesn't kick out right away then you can check (using the Voltstick) if there is any power to the second black wire. Turn the switch to the next position and see if there is a change. There should have been. This proves that the power going to the switch is interupted when the switch is thrown. Any other result means that your place is wired weird and you may need the help of a professional. So to hook up your fan/light, you are going to attach the black source wire to the black switch wire, the white source wire to your white fan wire, the white switch wire to your black fan wire, and the green wire to your green fan wire.
Q:where can i buy these type of wires (copper insulated wires)??
You can buy it at the suggested locations. Insulated wires come in many types for various uses. Be sure the person you buy it from knows the use for which you are buying it. For instance, wire or cable for underground use is far different from house wiring.
Q:I am building an ice chest boombox and want to wire a toggle (on/off) switch to turn the amp on and off....the amp is wired directly to the battery....my question is that I am using 6 gauge wire....but can't find any female spade connectors that are 6 or even 4 gauge to hook to the terminals on the switch.....what is a simple way to do this....am I going to have to solder the wire straight to the terminals?
Why not wire the toggle switch into the remote + wire? The one that turns the amp on and off with the head unit. 7/5/2013**** Leave the power supply wire alone. The thick 4 gauge wire that runs from the battery directly to the amp, leave it alone, don't put a toggle switch inline on that wire. Instead there's a wire from your head unit (or ignition) that runs to your amp, it turns on the amp when the head unit turns on or your ignition key is in the on position. It's usually 16 or 14 gauge. That's the wire where the toggle switch belongs. Look at your amp, this wire I am speaking of is probably labeled remote+ or ign or something like that and it's usually located next to your power and ground connections on the amp.
Q:lime wire
once you get the songs off of Lime wire, create and put them on a play list. then burn it. i usually burn mine off of Windows Media Player, but it's all up to you were you burn it from
Q:When was the hot-wire anemometer invented? and who was it?
Who Invented Anemometer
Q:why use a large gauge spark plug wires
Wow, both answers are wrong and one that took engineering classes bashing on somebody that didnt. Both answers sounds dumb and foolish Spark plug wires. 99% of the larger wires is ONLY the outside jacket thats larger. Not the inner wound wire. Stock will be a 5mm to 7mm size. This is the size of the outside dia. An 8mm, 8.5mm, or 10mm plug wire will have the same size inside dia but with a thicker jacket on outside. This thicker jacket only helps to prevent nicks, rips, cuts in jacket that gets down to wire, also makes wire able to withstand a higher temp from under hood parts For the Mech. Eng.. Please tell me how you could ruin the spark plugs for too much voltage by using larger wires The voltage output in set up the coil. If the coil puts out 30,000 volts DC, then putting a 0 ga. wire on it will NOT change the amount of voltage that gets to the plug. A wire don't add voltage to the coil. Now the plugs resistance can and will change. A stock type wire may ohm out at 3,000 ohms per foot. This will keep some of the voltage from reaching the plug. Better, performance wires will ohm out at 50-400 ohms per foot, but this has nothing to do with the thickness of wire. Its the design and the carborn wound inner wire Lower ohms is better
Q:Ceiling lights wire guage
You should check your building code in your area even though 12/2 is the most common allowed wire for homes some juridictions require 10/2 which is a larger gage wire. If you do not use what is code than if it causes a fire your insurance may not pay due to you usse a wire that is not up to code
Q:Wired car radio no sound powered on then wires crossed had to run red straight to battery. Then memory and ground crossed. Now nothing. Checked fuses radio fuse is bad. Will i also need a new wiring harness? Stereo Works fine when hooked up to battery charger.
Yeah i had them all wired together right i didnt tape them off cause i was trying to see if there was a bad speaker or something and.the.ignition wires hit.the.ground so i ran it straight to the battery cause i thought the ignition wire shorted out in harness then i was told to check radio fuse.
Q:I NEED TO CHECK IF A WIRE IS GOOD ON A FITNESS MACHINE. HOW DO I KNOW IF ITS GOOD? WHAT SHOULD THE OHMS BE?
Wire Ohms
Q:I wired an outdoor lamp-post. I tested it before wiring it to the fuse box...and if I touch the lamp-post I feel the current (a slight shock). I will be using a ground fault breaker....so I assume if I wire it to that I am going to loose the connection. Any thoughts on what is wrong?
You likely scratched the wire somewhere. When I did an outdoor shed the wire made a corner on some metal and scratched the insulation. It is a leak rather than hooking up the wrong wire, otherwise you would have gotten more than a tingle. First I would examine everywhere the wire comes in contact with the post. Second Check all the connections to see if some were improperly taped, or the wire was cut when stripping.
