- Q:on the ceiling of an ensuite in our house, the paint is all starting to crack and peel and flake off. I have been given the task of scraping it all off with a metal scraper and it is really tedious and is taking ages to do it. This happened before, so we were told to paint a primer first adn then paint over it with normal paint. It didn't work. Like I said, the wall is a plasterboard, is there anyway to easily strip off the paint? and how can we stop this happening again?
- It could be a water problem above, When paint starts to peel on plaster it will start checking or cracking, this is because the paint is loosing it's adhesion to the plaster, when the plaster gets wet it gose back to when it was applied, the paint will peel when the plaster drys out, The plaster ceiling could be getting wet from a bathroom above or a roof leak. This type of damage can be repaired, as for peeling the paint Home Depot has T handle razor wallpaper strippers in the Paint Dept. that work great at removing paint failures from ceiling and walls. On my site I have pictures of peeling paint, also plaster repairs.
- Q:Spackle is not doing the job.
- You need something behind the joint compound to hold it. If you just try to fill the hole with mud, you'll get nothing but a wall full of plaster. I usually use newspaper, its cheap and holds the plaster . Fill it in a few times, tape and Spackle, sand it flush.

- Did you use actual plasterboard, or gypsum board, (also known as gyp rock)? Anyway, if you put up the normal gyp rock, and have taped and smoothed on the proper joint compound, then the only thing left that is important before tiling a back splash, is to prime the surface with primer paint. Now in kitchens and baths you should be using moisture resistant gyp rock. Sometimes called green board (because it's green in colour) or the moisture, and mould resistant gyp rock that is sometimes called blue board (because it is blue in colour). However, if you have already used the standard beige or grey coloured gyp rock, don't panic, and rip it all down. It might be better to just leave well enough alone. You are just going to have to take a little more care to protect the gyp rock surface from water when you are done. First make sure your primer paint is the mold resistant type like Kilz. Then you should be able to tile your back splash using the recommended adhesive, grout, and seal. After that make sure that you caulk around where the tiled back splash meets your countertop. This is important because any water that gets into the gyp rock behind will get damaged and promote the growth of mould, and eventually your lovely tile will fall off where the damage occurs. If you regularly inspect and maintain your caulk lines (about once a year) then you shouldn't have any problem.

- I was just at my sister-in-law's place and what she did to her bathroom ceiling after installing a fan was: paint the ceiling in the colour you like and then crinkle tissue paper up and after unfolding it apply to ceiling, smoothing as you go, let dry and repaint. This gives a crinkle appearance to the ceiling but helps to hide any marks that are left on the ceiling by removing the lights.
