Q:We just had our first child, and his room is right above the garage. It is noticebly colder in his room, especially the floor. I used the plastic window kits and that helped, however, the floor is still extremely cold and I would like to at least check the insulation in the garage ceiling. Right now there is drywall on the ceiling, but I have no qualms about ripping it down, not real worried what it looks like. What should I look for...I believe there is very old (50 years) fiberglass insulation but i'm not 100% sure. If there is the old insulation there...should I look to replace it? If so, with what R value...Is this a project that someone without specific experience in the field could complete? I'm pretty handy but certainly not a pro. I'm not worried at all how it looks in the garage.
This project can be easily completed by someone with little to no experience. Since you believe the insulation is 50+ years old, your best coarse of action is to tear out the drywall and existing insulation and replace with new R-30 insulation. Fiberglass insulation starts to degrade after 50 yrs. R values vary on your location and climate, but a in general an R-30 batts would work for this application.

Q:Does the fiberglass ceiling do the ceiling?
Long mineral wool ceiling to introduce advanced Japanese production technology, the use of European green standards testing, monitoring, the introduction of the production of European-style Italian light steel keel production system.
Q:wool /foil/fibtreglassim lost what would be the best as in cooler at summer and warmer in winter
Fiberglass is the best. You can either go with batts or loose fill, which is blown in. 14 of loose fill gives you R-38, as does 13 of batts. Hope this helps.

Q:I was replacing a bathroom fan and the new bathroom fan is bigger than the old one. I took out the old one. Then I used a pencil and traced around the new fan. Then I used a reciprocating saw for the first time and got a little crazy with it. Now the hole is slightly too big and when I put the grill cover on the fan, I can see the hole. I'm not sure what to do now. I still got old pieces of the ceiling. Maybe I can do something with it?
It sounds like when you put the fan in you can see holes around it. If that is correct then get some cardboard and wrap around the fan two or three times around the fan where it fits through the hole. So later when it is removed it give the correct gap around the fan fit to the hole. Now you should be able to secure the fan in place but not up tight to the roof, so you can still get plaster into the gap. Then get some plaster filler. you can get it from hardware store. And with a scraper that is used for plaster fill the gap. Let it dry. You then take the fan out and then remove the cardboard and discard. With the cardboard out their should be just the right amount of gap for the fan to fit back in snuggle and perfect. Use just enough cardboard as you think will do the job. The plaster also sticks to the card board and not the fan housing. You can also rap some Glad Wrap around the cardboard on the out side and it will pull away from the plaster easier when it is dry. Then sand, then you may need that repair with the fiber netting that sticks to it, to strengthen the around the hole. ( buy from hardware. just ask them and they will know. ) stick some of that on to strengthen it and put more plaster on. Let dry, sand and paint. If you google wall plastering repairs you should be able to get some demonstration on how to repair walls with holes so it will show you how to use the mesh to repair. It is not really very difficult. Good luck.
Q:Hi, about 2 weeks ago I was in my ex boyfriend's attic (with his permission! lol) and he noticed a crack, which turned into a hole when I slipped and almost fell through into the bedroom! If you lie in bed you can now see right through to the attic; while it could be considered a design feature, my ex isn't keen on it :-) It's not very big, probably only 1.5ft square if that but obviously the plaster is missing, one of the lathes (think that's what they're called; the thin pieces of wood just behind the plaster) is broken in half and poking throught he hole and little bits of the fibreglass indsulation are falling down. My ex told his landlord who said it would cost ?150 to repair the damage, but I'm convinced my ex could do it himself...but how? Any ideas? I have been offered a large piece of plasterboard, could he use this in any way and would he have to enlarge the hole to replace the entire lathe? How does he replaster...etc - help please!

Q:I wonder if there is fibreglass in it.It is easily scraped off, but creates dust from particles.I could remove it myself, but am wary of the dangers it might pose to lungs. There are no windows to the classroom. A student told me that it exacerbates his asthma. The schoolboard solution is to cover it up with a hanging tiledceiling. Is that reasonable? No money in education for removal, unless dangerous. Do I have any reason for concern?
I would research it with the health dept. because it could have hazardous chemicals in it. just think they used lead based paint until I think 1978?
