- To begin with, I would pull up all the floor decking down to the joist, and make absolutely sure all joist are good. Once that's done and i have determined all to be good, i would lay down a 3/4 plywood. I would use a floor grade tongue and groove. You could use treated plywood, but its really not needed as long as you take all necessary steps during the remodel. After you lay down your cement board, make sure you grout the joints of the cement boards and allow to dry before applying thinset for the tiling, this helps to make moister barrier. make sure you seal the tile grout joints after laying the tile. make sure the sealer has ample time to dry. proper installation of the wax ring on the toilet is very important. make sure the toilet sits flat after installation and that it does not rock. use a good silicone caulk around the tub and the base of the toilet as well. you might also reseal the grout joints every year or so because alot of floor cleaners on the market can deteriorate the sealer. just a side note; if you can put a glass of water on the floor and when you walk on the floor and the water moves, the floor has what is call spring in it. all this means is that in time all the springing action in the floor can cause hairline cracks in the grout joints thus providing a channel for water. if this is the case then seal regularly. hope this helps

- try it on a smoother platform....wood? maybe. try using sneakers or some sort of a shoe that has a rubbery feel on the bottom. because, the concrete here is very scratchy and has many bumps. it gets annoying i cant even stand on a skateboard without hurting 1 part of my body here. haha. tried it. lol

- Q:We're trying to get inspiration for this project. We want something less expensive than a regular bed frame and easy to move, in other words as easy to break down and load up as possible. We have already bought a queen mattress, 9 cement blocks, and four 40x30 inch three-quarter thick plywood boards to do a basic platform bed. But after getting the materials I realized how short this bed is going to be. I want it more traditional height. I could go get 9 more blocks to make it 8 inches taller but really the first round of blocks are more than I want to fool with when we're moving.So after googling, I found the milk crate & board foundation idea. But by the time I buy enough crates, and considering the money I've already spent on all the cement blocks, we could buy a traditional frame.Anybody have ideas on something else to use? Lightweight but sturdy. And cheap? Or know of any place to buy the rigid crates less than $10 a piece?Thanks
- Blues man have great ideas! You need to consider the weight or the lack there of - when putting together a platform bed and the height of the mattress off the floor- or the sheets and blankets won't hand correctly. What floor in the house is it going? Cement blocks are heavy- is the second floor going to take all of the additional weight without creating other issues. If you put them on wooden flooring- your going to scratch the heck out of it. On a rug- your going to destroy the rug, additionally, all cement throws dust. If you used milk crates the weight and shape of them would present a problem as they wouldn't make the correct shape due to being perfectly square, when a mattress which have standard sizes. The other issue, is milk crates will be noisy unless of course you sleep like the dead and have no sex drive:~O Good luck!
- Q:I have Hardibacker cement board down for ten years. Just removed the ceramic tile and mortar from it for a new tile job. Do I need to retape the joints or should they be stable at this point. The cement board was screwed into postion.
