Q:Does any one know the best way to go about have an entire house run off of a generator? Mostly likely over periods of no great than two weeks. But it needs to supply a Washer/Dryer, Central A/C, Water Heater, and all of the basics of a smaller house. I did the math and the math says the max I will need is apprx 13,500W. I've done a lot of research on portable, residential, and even green energy, but I am having trouble finding the best way to go about powering a house continually. I need something relatively quiet, or something I can run a ways from the house.And lastly one more curve ball, this is for west TX, so there's not too much rain, especially these days. But it is a desert atmosphere, so I need a way to keep it out of the elements. Any suggestions? Well ventilated shed maybe? Thanks!

No. A meltdown can happen when a reactor is not adequately cooled. At Indian Point, there are reserve diesel generators that are located 15 feet above the sea level. In the region, floods over 7 feet high never happened. At Fukushima, such generators were located low enough to be swamped by the tsunami. In case of simultaneous loss of its own power (reactor shutdown) and external power that may happen if high winds rip out the wires at the plant's switch yard, the coolant water can still be pumped through the reactor core. The pumps would be powered by diesel generators.

Q:Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.

Yes you are mistaken. The Fukushima station was designed to withstand average tsunami that had occurred in that area. However the tusnami that hit was much larger than any seen before in that area, or in recorded human history for that matter. Even if you could design a facility to withstand a 200 or even 500 year disaster, eventually you'll encounter something even larger, and then you'll be right back here whining about why did they only design the structure for a 500 year disaster, blah blah blah. Furthermore, such a facility would be prohibitively expensive and over engineered. Was it a risk to only design something to withstand a once-in-a-century event? Sure, but there's no such thing as 0% risk.

Q:I have been given a cheap diesel generator made from china. It starts alright, but seems to be reving very high and poping and spitting until it has ran for a while. It surges some times as well. I don't really like it much and haven't used it to power anything other then to load test it a bit. I have checked the motor and all it has is a simple governor on it with no adjustments? I am not sure even where to start adjusting anything on this. Any body have one of these and same problem? Please I was given it, I would like to get a little service out of it , not just junk it Fuel, oil, air filter are all new.so? help?

So what did you want to do with this engine? It sounds like a stationary engine used to power a generator or pump or similar application at a constant RPM.

If you mean the build-in pcb of a fuel/diesel generator which build-up voltage initially and then keep it stable under any load, then read this: First you need to see your generator minimum requirements to determine specs of AVR. You will probably found a label on generator with those Information: Ex. volt (maximum excitation voltage) Ex. amp (maximum excitation amperage) Your AVR output must exceed those specs. If generator is brushless type in most cases it does. Also input voltage of AVR must be the same as output of generator (ex. 110V110V, 220V220V). If generator is triple phase then you can do the same (ex. 380V380V, 440V440V) but if generator have output in star formation then you can use node for a smaller voltage of AVR (ex. 380V220V, 440V253V). If generator work in parallel operation (usually marine main generators does) then things get complicated. In this case AVR is good to support current transformer to make generator more elastic under load fluctuations and match other generators in the same circuit.
