Q:I know I take for granted that I have indoor plumbing but where does the water pressure that causes water to flow come from when I turn on my sink? Is it a pump. Where does the energy come from?
The water drains out of the sink because it is a downhill flow from the sink to the sewerage outlet. The actual pressure is due to the height of the water and gravity. This can be stated as a head, in meters. Similarly the water comes out of a tap because it has a downhill flow from the supply reservoir typically. This can be a tank on a hill, or a tower. The water is transferred to the reservoir from its source like a lake by a pump, which gets it uphill to the reservoir. The pump is usually an electric one, though a diesel generator could be used as backup, or even a diesel driven pump could be used. Electricity is cheaper to run, considering the energy involved can be costly. The static pressure comes from the height of the reservoir above the tap outlet. This is also seen as a head. The typical pressure is 40 to 80 psi (equivalent to 30 to 60m of head or water column). Once the water is flowing at full bore the pressure drops, due to the pipe resistance and such effects, typically represented as 10-20psi approx. 8 to 16m of head. This is the pressure before the water leaves the tap (faucet), and is enough to flow through some device like a shower. At a remote property a tank stand may be used to get some height, or a pressure pump, which is equivalent. With a pressure pump the water is pumped into a rubber bladder like a large football bladder, so it can be squeezed out on demand. The pump runs cyclically as required to keep sufficient pressure in the bladder. This arrangement is known as an accumulator. High buildings may have related accumulators or a reservoir on top, and a pump/s to get water up there.
Q:I really need to know to know this.@ two days old. my baby was subjected to a high level of diesel fumes coming in from the hospital vents. Due to testing of generators and backed up through vent. she was in the room roughly 30 minutes what kinda damage should I be concerned about. should I be concerned? how long would it stay in lungs and the blood? please if you know.thanks
After exposure to diesel gas fumes, if not, taken for treatment of oxygen inhalation in an incubator,0r oxygen tent -----the effect will be fatal ---byway of mucus collection and respiratory interference of gaseous exchange leading to fatality because of brain damage, for a continued exposure for more than 30minutes ---please read ---diesel-byproduct-result-in-brain damege
Q:How much carbon does the average diesel-powered (not hybrid or diesel-electric) freight train engine emit per ton-mile?
no expert on the rail industry but i dont believe any US company uses a strictly diesel freight train any more. they have all been diesel electric for awhile now. as far as carbon they should still be lower than a comparable amount of semi's
Q:I want to know if someone put gasoline instead of diesel in my generator. I'm use to seeing dark yellow fuel in it and now the muffler is red hot
Well I remember my Dad had purple diesel on the farm. Everclear is a great band. My favorite song by them is AM Radio.

Q:and what would allow the most crop turnovers of growth? Hemp???
yes as long as the generator has been retro-fitted to use biofuel and not petroleum. A diesel generator would do this best Probably algae would be the best thing to use as you can get several generations a month from it. hemp takes a long season to grow and really only the seeds would have enough sugar to be used to distill biofuel. Beets (which you can get several crops a season from as they are fairly fast growing) would be far better than hemp for fuel as you want high sugar or starch crops (starch can be converted to sugar). But why run a generator on biofuels when it would be easier to run it on solar or wind
Q:I understand it as far as the diesel engine driving the generator- or is it an alternator?- to power the motors which turn the wheels. But does each wheel have its own motor, or is it one motor per axle?
Diesel-electric locomotives most commonly use one traction motor per axle, with the motor shaft parallel to and beside the wheel axle and with a simple pair of gears connecting the two. Early diesel-electric locomotives used a DC generator that directly fed DC traction motors, with the generator often doubling as a starter motor. By the 1970s, locomotives commonly used alternators (which were easier to maintain) that generated AC current, which was rectified back to DC to power the same DC traction motors as before. The EMD GP38 was notably produced with both a generator and an alternator, with the alternator-powered version called the GP38AC. AC traction motors became commonplace in the early to mid 1990s - but they do not use the electricity produced by the alternator directly as it is not of the correct frequency. The AC power from the alternator is first rectified to DC, then (using inverters) back to AC current of the correct frequency for the traction motors. GE locomotives use one inverter per traction motor, while all but the most recent EMD locomotives used one inverter per truck. The traction motors are readily visible on six-axle units such as recent EMD SD series locomotives or GE Dash-9 and AC units. These locomotives all have traction motors that face inwards, so that they all face the same direction on each truck. On the innermost axle they extend considerably beyond rim of the wheels toward the fuel tank, visible in this photo I took of an EMD SD40-2: trainiax /photos/2013/2013-05- To account for the different current and resistance characteristics of the electric motors at low and high speed, locomotives have one or several transitions between wiring the motors in series or in parallel, or in a combination of both.
Q:I have a bunch of old diesel left over from y2k, a family friend stored 10k gallons and its turned a brown color, it dosent small funny at least to me, still looks red if you put it up to the light but it is not vivid red like it used to be it has a dingy brown color. It was originally RED diesel.Im afraid to run this in my generator, is there any additive I can add to clean it up or fix it that you have PERSONAL experience with.?

Q:Im building a new house, and I would like to go totally off the grid in South-Central Oklahoma.Id like to be able to run the tv, freezer, refrigerator, and minimal lights and water well.Im looking for information on a complete system.Any ideas/? Im looking for the pros and cons of this way of life from homeowners that have actually done this.
We are off grid in ky. Look into extremely efficient appliances, led bulbs, passive solar as well as solar hot water and active solar storage. You ALWAYS need more batteries than you have. Increase insulation to decrease heat/cooling losses. Install a cistern with a large rainwater catchment. 2500 gallons is not too much. Purchase property that has a woodlot and year round spring. Best to buy the whole watershed to ensure clean water.
