The governor keeps the motor from running faster than a set rate, an actuator receives an input from a button and causes a mechanical device to engage. Speed and Load controllers determine how fast the generator motor should turn over for a certain electrical demand, as in number of devices plugged in to the electric socket.

Depends on the use of the generator. Power and current are related. Divide the rated power of the generator( I assume is diesel driven) by the voltage of the area where you operate (Europe is 240) so 1000000 VA: 2404,166 ampere in the most favourable conditions (Power factor 1) usually the current value is multiplied by .7(Minimum Power Factor acceptable) which will give you a maximum continuous current of circa 3500 ampere. If you are using the generator for emergency you require an automatic starting system and a priority circuit together the standard protection panel which include: 1 Over and Under voltage protection 2 Over and Under frequency protection 3 Phase sequence 4 Overload. Most of these panels have other functions as well. If you require more information than what I have written, I suggest you look at some of the leaflets provided by manufactures

Your choices are limited. You can get a bunch of auto batteries and an inverter. How many batteries and the size of the inverter depends on the load of the pump, which you don't mention. Or a long extension cord.

Q:Basically, I want to set up the new homestead off grid and would like to do it with a diesel generator to a DC disconnect, to a charge controller, to a battery bank, to the system meter, to the main DC disconnect, to an inverter, then to an AC breaker panel. Just like a solar array system but using the diesel instead of panels for the first year or two. The home will be using no more than about 22kWH daily. I guess the main question is how do I use a diesel generator in place of 19, 210W solar panels without running the generator 24-7?

That's a lot of energy for off-grid. We're on grid, and don't use 22 kWh a day. Be that as it may, I have heard of people who use a generator in tandem with solar. The solar provides enough to keep a small battery bank charged. In prolonged cloudy spells, they fire up the genny to top off the battery bank. Maybe that would work without the solar. Another approach would be to have a separate circuit on the generator, with the high-power, non-critical systems plugged into it. So if they're going to wash clothes, use power tools, or something like that, they turn on the generator. At other times, the small battery bank is enough.

Q:Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. They know there would be tsunamis around the area, but they never expected the tsunamis of that magnitude. After the incident, the geographers dig the land and found there were tsunamis of that size about 700 years ago. It is difficult for ppl to predict the natural disasters that come in 700-year interval. They prepared for the earthquakes and tsunamis of the grade of every 70~300-year interval, but obviously, it wasn't enough for the preparation. Therefore, the gov. is asked the geographers to check the ground to find any sign of past disasters and to reassess the security measures. Obviously, the scientists have better methods to research the land compared to 30-40 years ago, so if any problem was found, the gov. says they would close up the power plants.

Q:I accidentally filled my generator with diesel instead of unleaded. It already had a half a tank of unleaded so it has about half a tank of diesel. To make the full tank. Can anybody help me out please.

That won't hurt anything, the generator just won't run well because there is too much diesel for it to burn right. Take the fuel line off of the carburetor and drain it all into a can and put new gas in, it will be just fine. You can take the stuff you drained out and put it in your car so you don't waste it, you'll never know it was there if it's just a gallon or two. It won't hurt anything. But do not do this in reverse, by putting any quantity of gas in a diesel bad news.

Q:I know with cars there is a blue book but how does it work for a generator? We have an 80kw Kholer Diesel generator with 1,050 hrs on it and it's 13 years old. It gets regular maintenance and is in great shape. I've been looking online but can't seem to figure out how much it's worth.

$8,000-$15,000 depending on the exact model and much more information. Generators have as many options as cars, and that is why the prices vary.

Q:I would like to try a browns gas generator on a 3 cylinder Diesel engine to compare efficiency and save money and not add a turbo to the unit. I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience in this. I am also considering a natural gas flow to the intake.

It would work about as well as it works on a petrol engine. Not at all. Forget it.
