Q:I noticed how all the commuter trains here in Massachusetts use diesel engines. Will they switch to overhead lines in the not so distant future?

Bombardier has come up with some new technology that will not require the ugly overhead power lines. Right now its being geared for trams and light rail. A box is buried underneath the track, and when the train passes over there is a surge of energy that gets passed to the train battery. A person can walk over the track and box, but they will not be affected. Right now the technology is not advanced enough for heavier trains. Massachusetts will probably go to a new dual mode locomotive by Bombardier thats being built right now in Kassel Germany. It has a pantograph on top for the power lines. When it comes to a line without power it uses diesel and battery. Its really a revolutionary locomotive that will be ready in 2011. New Jersey Transit has 28 on order with an option to buy almost 90 locomotives if it works out.

I think you mean diesel-electric generator. Properly, a diesel generator is a factory that makes diesel fuel. And the parts (at a high level, as there are thousands of parts total) are a diesel engine, plus fuel tank. an electric generator or alternator and electronic and mechanical controls to adjust the engine and generator so that it outputs the required voltage and frequency as the load changes.

I would like to help--but I need to know what size of generator you want 2.8 k-12 k ; and what type of fuel Gasoline, propane, diesel. I would ask why don't you mount a Onan Micro quite or light into the side or front of your fifth wheel---but with out seeing your trailer I have no idea what to recommend

many years ago, when Bank of America needed such, the choice was between diesel or jet turbine. the money was about the same. the needed load was better met by diesel at that time. diesel and turbine fuel storage does not run the risk of leaking. in addition, the generators are used several times a year, during periods of high demand, as requested by PGE, for which the bank gets a reduced rate on it's electricity all year round. after the Loma Prieta quake, the bank came within 6 hours of running out of fuel for the generators.

The original Soviet version was nuclear powered, but the Russians took that equipment out before they sold it to the Chinese. There are numerous diesel powered boilers, generators, and turbogenerators installed.

You should consider a data center if you are going to do anything more than low traffic personal web pages and brochure-ware web pages. Data centers provide more reliable connectivity with a massive economy of scale. They also provide physical security, cooling, and power reliability you would not be able to achieve as economically. While you will eventually want to own the hardware, starting out you may not have the volume to justify it. How dose the cash flow series of buying compare to leasing at the beginning of your business? Depending on where you add value it may even be worth while to start as a reseller. Before you decide to host locally talk to your telco about leased lines, Service Level Agreements, and minimum committed bit rates. I hope this helps.

OK - You have elaborated - At that voltage you will have about 2400 Amperes. I P/E You have a generator putting out about 1 million watts. Divide that by the voltage and you get the usable amperes at rated voltage. Drop that to 380 3 phase Y would transformer. With loss through this you will have about 2352 amps. But the voltage has dropped from 415 to 380 so the amperes will go up. You will have about 2500 amps available at the output side of the transformer. Remember this is TOTAL amperes across all 3 legs of the windings. Remember that The Power is ALWAYS equal to the VOltage X the Amperage. If one goes up the other goes down. That will NOT change. Transformers are 98% efficient so you must calculate the initial loss through the primary transformet before you calculate the oiwer available for your main buss. If you have 1000 KVA before the transformer you will have 980 KVA at the out side. At 380 V, 3 phase you will have 2578 Amps. 980,000VA/380V 2578.94A OK So far? For safety you have to derate the system by 20% to prevent overload and burnout of the Generator or transformer. you have 2000 amps at 380 volts. That is on your main buss in the master control panel. You have a master breaker there feeling smaller buss lines. On each of these is one breaker per machine OR you can take sub feeder lines to sub panels throughout the factory. From these sub panels you can distribute 3 phase for motors and secondary panels for 110 or 200 single phase for lighting and hand tools. This is so complex and I want to tell you so much. How about I go there and do it.

If you are talking about the truck (traction) motors on a locomotive, then whole power system! diesel engine, generator, exciter generator, truck motors, can range anywhere from seven hundred horsepower for a switch engine up to several thousand horsepower for a line haul locomotive. The traction motors get their power from the generator which is connected to the diesel engine. There is no direct mechanical connection from the diesel engine to the wheels. All the diesel engine does is turn the generator. The power from the generator is what running the traction motors which in turn drives the wheels of the locomotive. That is where the term diesel over electric comes from. In short the diesel engine drives the generator. The power from the generator drives the traction motors. The traction motors drive the wheels. The wheels drive the locomotive. The amount of power the generator puts out is controlled by two things. How fast it is turning (number of RPM and how much excitation voltage it's fields are being excited with by the exciter generator. Both the RPM's and the excitation voltage is controlled by the engineer. The advantage of using diesel over electric is they can tandem several locomotives together to pull long trains and be able to control them all from the lead engine. (Locomotive) As far as size Look at the trucks on the locomotive. The area between the wheels is pretty muchly taken up by the traction motors. Here is another fact. The generator is a DC generator and the traction motors are DC motors. Most of the time they are series wound DC motors for better starting torque since they are always coupled to a load.
