Cummins has a great low end torque, so it can get a load moving pretty good. Inline engines are used in most freight trucks because of this. However, the downside of certian model Dodge trucks was a short lived automatic transmission. Thats why a lot of people went with the 6-speed tranny, which could pull a house. Cummins is also great on top end as far as speed and last just as long. When I was looking for a truck to buy, I was looking for a Ford body with the Cummins swap. I'm not a big fan of the Dodge body style. A Ford crew cab has more space than that of the Dodge REGULAR crew cab. International also builds inline engines that are mainly used in larger vehicles. International (Navistar) has been building diesel engine for the past 175yrs. International stopped building Power Stroke engines for Ford because they could not agree on the price for a length of time. I think Ford's now in house built engine has topped the current version of the Cummins in aspects as far as performance and maintanence. And you couldn't pay me to take a duramax

Q:I want to power a water heater, a blower fan, and a small water pump continuously with a diesel generator run on Biodiesel. Is it possible to set up a system of some deep cycle batteries that will carry the load for say 1/2 hour or 1 hour and have the generator kick on automatically when the voltage drops to charge the batteriesthis way the generator will not be run continuously. What would you need to set this up? Anything besides what I have mentioned?Josh

Yes, this is quite possible. What you need to do is to determine the maximum current draw, and size the equipment accordingly. One important point to remember is that batteries do not like to be re-charged rapidly. Therefore, the drain on the batteries in say 1/2 hour, may take several hours to recharge. This scheme works very well with solar energy, but what you may very well end up with huge losses in efficiency. I can tell you first hand, that if you are able to buy power from the electric company, it will be the cheapest, cleanest alternative. And, no, I do not work for the government, or the power company but I do have an old wind turbine and an empty bank book.

Q:I get conflicting opinions from mechanics about extended shut-down.I am parked for 3 months and driving is not an option. Should I re-start my diesel engine weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or just wait the 3 months and re-start then? If so, should I just restart as normal?I do know when I re-start, I must wait until normal temperture is reached prior to shut down, this could take 20 minutes or longer with the rear mounted engine. The radiator covered from the outside will not warm-up as fast as a front mounted engine. Covering this radiator from the inside is not an option due to a shroud covering the fan.

if you are going to leave it sitting they can sit for more than a year and it will still run fine but the only question is the battery they can not stay fully charged so if not using then disconnect the positive side to the battery and when you want to use it just reconnect it this is the way i do to preserve the battery and for added protection add stabil (fuel stabilizer) to diesel if it is going to sit through the winter Edit : a battery charger is a good idea My parent's RV has a solar panel which keeps the battery fully charged but does not use the RV much 1 to 2 times a year had a stabil in it so far no problems but the generator is problematic cause it runs on gas so I had to start it every month to make sure there is no problems with it(run it for 1/2 hour) gas deteriorates faster than diesel even if it has stabil

The type of gen I have is asynchron, 400/690 V, 7,5 kW, 9,4 kVA and I was told that I need to stimulate it with capacitors (the unit is supposed to work without connection to a public netstand-aloneisland-service). Who can give me instructions how to do the el. part, size/type of capacitors etc?

Because it lacks a separate field circuit, an induction generator cannot produce reactive power. In fact, it consumes reactive power, and an external source of reactive power must be connected to it at all times [1]. So you are right that you will need a three-phase capacitor bank at the output terminals (delta-connected). How to size the capacitors? That depends on a few things. Namely what kind of loads are going to be attached to it. I presume this is going to be an emergency generator operating alone (most induction generators are used this way nowadays). In that case, your capacitor bank will need to account for the generator consuming reactive power and the loads consuming reactive power. So, if you know what you are going to connect to the generator, figure up an estimate of the total reactive power of your loads. Then estimate how much reactive power your generator consumes (not sure how to do this; maybe estimate from your 7.5kW and 9.4kVA ratings?). Finally, to size your capacitors equate the total power consumed by gen and loads to this formula: estimated_3phase_power_consumed 3*(line-to-line_volt)^2/X where X 1/(2*pi*freq*C) Solve for C and there you go. My source indicates that the output voltage for an induction generator can vary quite a bit with varying inductive load, so bear that in mind and maybe oversize the caps a bit. Also, the types of capacitors should be able to withstand AC obviously and be rated within your expected operating temp, etc, etc. Good luck.

Advantages: does not release greenhouse gases, requires little fuel, fuel source is extremely abundant (there is more energy in recoverable and fertile thorium that in all other source of energy combined, except for hydrogen fusion, which we do not know how to do yet) Disadvantage: delicate to implement, can be missused to produce nuclear weapons components, leaves radioactive waste that remain radioactive for centuries and millenias, scares people and is thus costly to build because of all the multiple redundancy safety systems.
