It is not good to run a Diesel generator throughout the year without stopping. It requires regular stopping for maintenance, at least once a week for cleaning or replacement of oil filters and replacement of parts.THE SHUTDOWN MAY LAST 8 OR !6 HOURS DEPENDING ON THE PARTS TO BE REPLACED.

Q:I have a Kubota GL7000 portable diesel generator. now I've followed the recommended maint. schedule on it, new fuel filters, oil filters, oil changes, etc. I have just under 1,000 hours on it right now, it smokes a little when it's cold but when it warms up it runs nice and smooth and with no smoke, it seems to me that it's running really solid and I have no complaints or problems, but I'm curious how long a generator like this (2 years old) should last me?

ok so you a caring owner of the kubota gen. well a bit of smoke is ok w/ 1k hrs and you dont say how many times you use it ie you start it up just to ck it or your actualiy putting a load on it with power being draw on the gen. ? also its important that the oil your using is combatible with the weather and area your using it in trust this 40 w in the rockies aint gonna work and in winter you need a heater in the sump too keep oil warm

Q:Hello, what I'm really trying to understand is how do large generators that power prisons, hospitals and various government buildings work? I have a basic understanding of regular house generators and their working process. What I want to know is how such a generator can acquire power in a case of a complete electric blackout, is there a back up supply line? another power source? Surely to supply a large building such as a prison or a hospital one would need a large reserve of power. So the question is where does that power come from? Or are they completely autonomous? Also are these generators commonly used nowadays and what is the difference between them and the reserve power system if any. I would greatly appreciate any answers that could explain the above. I leave mine on all the time. I only reboot weekly. It doesn't hurt anything and I don't have to boot every time I want to get online.

You would need to be more specific. Multiply the watts of one laptop power supply by 14, then get a more powerful invertor. e.g. 14 x 50 watt laptops 700 watts, get at least a 1 Kw invertor. It is difficult to predict how long a particular battery will power an invertor, a 1 Kilowatt load will draw a huge current, about 50 amps from a 12 volt battery. If at all possible you would be better off using a petrol or diesel generator and extension leads, as the size of battery needed would be enormous, you would need a no. of 12 volt large 12 volt batteries joined together, or one battery and one x 100 watt invertor for each laptop. You might also consider using a battery to power a DC to DC convertor for each laptop. For example one laptop could use a 12 volt, 50 AH battery and a 12 to 20 volt convertor, this will probably run a 50 watt laptop for 6 hours. I say probably because the only way to know for sure is to try it out. For the price of 14 batteries and 14 convertors you can probably buy a really good silent 1 kw petrol generator. This will be smaller, lighter and probably safer than 14 x 50 AH batteries.

Yes, you can sell energy to the grid but it's often not cost-effective. You have to look at your equipment and operation cost, as well as the cost per kWh that your utility pays. Also, WVO is not as easy or free to come by as it used to be, as demand is now much higher. Restaurants usually don't give away their waste oil for free any more, as fuel companies now pay restaurants to pick up their used cooking oil. You can buy grid-tie inverters that plug into the wall outlet for reasonably small amounts of generation (about 1500 watts or less). For larger amounts of generation, you'll want a professionally-installed inverter and meter. The cost of electricity is so inexpensive per kWh that even if you did manage to source free WVO, the income from selling the electricity likely wouldn't even cover your costs to set up and maintain the generation equipment. Your system would also likely produce more emissions per kWh than the utility generation stations. You may have to deal with legislation for the emissions and/or noise, depending on how populated your area is.

Humans have not quite figured out how to safely use nuclear energy. Despite the best technical minds in the world, Japan, Russia, and the USA have failed to prevent disasters. Having worked in the nuclear energy field for an energy company and as a vendor, I can tell you that the rules are bent regularly despite what the PR folks tell the world and all those painful paper trails. The world as presented by spokespeople, executives, and media does not exist. The idea that a bigger technological hammer will solve problems created by an already oversized and uncontrollable technology just is insane. A big lead cap will just cause an explosion that is even bigger and more widespread. The only solution is long term. We must stop this insane technology that benefits the very wealthy elite who profit by putting these projects together. GE and Bechtel make out like bandits. It's the tax payer and the rest of us who end up footing the bill. We also have an even more deadly pandemic underway thanks to our friends at Monsanto. A small percentage of folks are now suffering from gluten allergies that are the direct result of genetic modifications to wheat. Many common foods we eat, like wheat, corn, and soy is constantly being changed and the problems (allergies and built in pest resistance) is are not immediately apparent. Some instances of poisoning from GM products are documented, but many may not be linked to the real cause for many years, if at all. More technology is not the answer.
