Any generator that is suitable for continuous operation will seem very pricey. If you pretend that each dollar weighs a pound, such a generator will cost a lot more than a ton of money. I am not sure what you are really asking about the operation of a diesel generator. You start the engine and connect the electrical load to the generator buss. If you are connecting to a grid or existing power system then you need to match the frequency of the grid. As to advantages and disadvantages, you need to state what you want to compare it to and how large the generator or system is.

Q:Hello. we are installing a Diesel Generator for running our house. We are off grid. We are buying a Cummins 15 KVA/12KW Prime Power Generator. This generator can supply 23 Amps per phase in the standby mode with a PF of .8 With the normal set up, we can run only 3, single phase 18,000 BTU ACs, one on each phase. I read somewhere that by installing Power factor Capacitors, we can install more than one AC on each phase. Do you know anything about that? Is it an easy task or do I need to get an engineering degree for this? I'm some what comfortable with doing electrical work and can do minor calculations as well.Any help would be really appreciated.Greetings from Iran
I'm not an HVAC expert, but I am an electronics expert. the power factor caps are used to limit the huge power surge when the AC compressor kicks in. They do not give you free power or allow more load. They just smooth out the load to protect the genset. there is a saying in the AC world about ELI the ICE man. in an inductive circuit voltage leads current, in a capcitive circuit, current leads voltage. the compressor is inductive, so you add capacitance to adjust the power factor.

It is absolutely possible. I've been thinking the same thing for a while now. The first step I think is to build an hydrogen/oxygen generator system then incorporate it into an existing portable electric generator that runs on gas. The next step should be to make adjustments to the gas/HHO mix and make it run. Lastly, do the tweaking until the motor runs exclusively on HHO. Sounds simple? Of course not. Just rememberThomas Alba Edison created thousands of prototypes for the incandescent buld before he finally came up with the right one.

The type of gen I have is asynchron, 400/690 V, 7,5 kW, 9,4 kVA and I was told that I need to stimulate it with capacitors (the unit is supposed to work without connection to a public netstand-aloneisland-service). Because it lacks a separate field circuit, an induction generator cannot produce reactive power. In fact, it consumes reactive power, and an external source of reactive power must be connected to it at all times [1]. So you are right that you will need a three-phase capacitor bank at the output terminals (delta-connected). How to size the capacitors? That depends on a few things. Namely what kind of loads are going to be attached to it. I presume this is going to be an emergency generator operating alone (most induction generators are used this way nowadays). In that case, your capacitor bank will need to account for the generator consuming reactive power and the loads consuming reactive power. So, if you know what you are going to connect to the generator, figure up an estimate of the total reactive power of your loads. Then estimate how much reactive power your generator consumes (not sure how to do this; maybe estimate from your 7.5kW and 9.4kVA ratings?). Finally, to size your capacitors equate the total power consumed by gen and loads to this formula: estimated_3phase_power_consumed 3*(line-to-line_volt)^2/X where X 1/(2*pi*freq*C) Solve for C and there you go. My source indicates that the output voltage for an induction generator can vary quite a bit with varying inductive load, so bear that in mind and maybe oversize the caps a bit. Also, the types of capacitors should be able to withstand AC obviously and be rated within your expected operating temp, etc, etc. Good luck.
Q:have several question about diesel alternator. First of all i want build micro hydro system using diesel alternator. That means i just take the alternator and using water to rotate the turbine and the alternator will produce the power. Do you think this system is possible to do? Before this i use the car alternator, and the problem is before alternator connected to the battery i get about 3000 RPM, but when i connect the alternator to the battery and field current occur, the RPM dropped to 500 RPM. So the alternator can't produce the current. So i want try using diesel alternator. Since we know diesel alternator power output in AC, so no field current needed. If i get around 3000 RPM, whether diesel alternator produce the power? Or it same with car alternator.
When you connect the battery, to the automotive alternator, you are making it operational, by activating the rotating magnetic field. It is slowing down, because it is now supplying power to its own field, as well as charging the battery. As the automotive alternator charges the battery, it may pickup speed over time. However, considering the drastic RPM drop when you connected the battery, I believe the power provided by the turbine is inadequate. It may be to small for the application, or the head provided by your water source is too low. Switching to a generator, designed to provide domestic power, i.e., 120/240 VAC 50/60 Hz, will greatly complicate your power-plant. Such devices must be rotated at their design speed, in order to produce power at the correct voltage and frequency. In contrast, automotive type alternators, along with their voltage regulators, whether they are internal or external, are designed to provide constant DC voltage over a wide range of shaft speed. Frequency is not an issue, because these three phase, alternating current generators, output direct current, via full-wave, solid state, internal rectification. Furthermore, any generator requires field current, unless it is a small generator, with exceptionally powerful permanent magnets. I recommend you stay with the automotive generator, along with a large deep cycle battery, and use an inverter to get alternating current. The battery, will be helpful in handling surges, or temporary loads, exceeding the automotive alternator's capacity.
