Depending on where you live, your main power may occasionally be supplied by a large diesel generator. During power outages I use a 5500 watt generator to supply power to my home. The computer is on backup power and I have never had a problem. There is absolutely no reason for concern if you have a good quality generator that works properly. If your generator supplies a stable output voltage it will work fine. However if your generator operates near it maximum load and the output voltage varies in frequency and voltage there is a possibility of damage to equipment connected. A UPS may assist, but unless the generator is perfect the UPS will switch to battery power. After a short time the battery will run down and the computer shut off.

You are calculating only the shaft horsepower to electric power output efficiency. That is separate and different from the internal combustion engine efficiency. Calculate that by comparing the fuel used and its heat content and its ability to do work versus the shaft horsepower.
Q:How much power does the generator from the diesel need to produce in order to bring the train up to running speed?
That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

A 5000 watt generator will normally supply most of what you need, a 3500 will give a little more trouble with overloads, but will be quieter wihen not loaded. That Yamaha is a nice generator, if your the type that drives a MB S-Class, if you drive a Ford, you may want to be looking at a $700 Generac brand generator, fuel consumption will vary with load, but running at near capacity will burn a tank (5 gallons) of fuel in 8 hours, the higher the consumption of a generator he bigger the tank they put on. May want to check to see if Fridge and freezer are on opposite legs of your 240V service. FYI: Many electrical panel companies now make bolt in transfer switches to make any circuit in your house available to a generator rather than a gentran that just allows a few circuits

Q:I Have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard with the chipset fan going at over 6000 RPM, an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ with the CPU fan at about 3000 RPM, and a GeForce 6200LE with a very high pitched fan that's dead annoying. To cut a long story short, my PC makes way more noise than it should be, now I don't have any case fans installed but that shouldn't mean that it has to make this sort of howling, believe me, if you were sitting next to it, you'd understand where I'm comin from, it's like tryin to sleep at night with a diesel generator in your room while it's downloading stuff. I had this problem, and one day, my computer just stopped. in fact, its sitting in the chair behind me. but it ended up being the CPU fan, put some thermal paste between it and your motherboard. Check your local Best Buy or Office Depot. but whatever you do, DO NOT TRY TO UNPLUG THE FAN! i did and my computer caught on fire (its not funny :[ ). And as a matter of fact, i can sleep with a diesel genereator beside me fine, im used to the noise, i sleep with a fan. ffs.
