Q:Please don't say wood/tile please say wood/tile is cheaper so I know exactly what you mean, lol. Does it depend on what kind of wood? I assume it does..For just the first floor, 1,040 sq. ft. THANKS!
Are okorder /... I have used it commercially in major retail stores and restaurants and it looks just as good as the day we installed it - 10 years later! You can't say that about wood and yes - its a do-it-yourself product. Tom A Sr. Construction Project Manager
Q:I am installing 4x4 ceramic tiles on a shower wall. I have been using a 1/4 x 1/4 sq. notch trowel, but am having trouble with the tiles staying put...should I use a 3/16 x 5/32 v-notch trowel instead?
Mike and Rob are correct - 1/4 square notch for a 4x4 tile. A 4x4 ceramic is a pretty light tile, if they're not sticking, there's an issue with your technique. You should be using a modified thinset (do NOT use pre-mixed (the stuff in a tub) thinset - it's actually a water-based adhesive and it will NOT last in wet areas ), mixed to the consistencey of peanut butter. A common DIY'er mistake is to mix their mortar too wet. First apply the thinset to the wall with the smooth edge of the trowel and work it back and forth a couple times. This keys the mortar into the backer board (you are applying over cement backer board, right?) for good adhesion to the wall. Then using the notched edge, held at a consistent 45 degree angle to the wall, remove the excess mortar. And work in small sections - with 4x4 tiles, apply the thinset in 2' squares -- otherwise the thinset will set up (and loose adhesion) before you get all the tiles in place. Small batches goes for mixing the thinset, too. Check the label, but most thinsets have a 1-2 hour pot time (how long it can sit in the bucket before it sets up) -- exceed that and the mortar will loose it's adhesion and the tiles won't stick. You can simplify wall tile installation by screwing a starter board to the wall (1x2 or strip of plywood works well), 3-4 courses up from the floor. This will support your first course, and tile spacers will support succesive courses. Then remove the board and finish up the bottom courses.
Q:Can I leave them alone and simply go over them w/ mud and ceramic tile . I really don‘t want to open the hazmat can of worms by getting the tiles tested. The tiles look like that mutfti pattern common in office buildings and schools and secured w/ a mastic. Thanks
I was always under the impression that there was more hazard from the adhesive that was used to lay the tile in old buildings, as it was full of asbestos fiber. Seems like they referenced this on more than one Home Improvement show I've seen. Of course, it's been many years and I've slept since then.
Q:I am thinking about tiling 2 bathrooms in a rental property and planning to use 12x12 tiles costing $1 each. I want to use the same tiles for bathtub surrounds as well as floor. I am looking for some advice about the size of tiles that may be appropriate. Thanks
If the tiles fit the area then 12x12 are fine. I used 12 tiles for my bathroom remodel and it turned out fine. You need to figure out how much cutting is involved. Get graph paper and see how it looks. Mine fit fine since it was divisable by 12.
Q:Can you put ceramic tile over the commercial grade hard plastic vinyl tile? It would be really hard to break up off the floor. It is stuck on there really good.
We had our kitchen redone with ceramic tiles. The company we hired (very good reputation) used a couple thousand floor screws, leveled the floor, applied the adhesive and tiled over top. After 3 years, there is not a crack in the grout - and no tile has moved. So - yes
Q:My grandpa‘s bathroom needs to have a few adjustments made to it, namely safety bars put in place around the tub to help him in and out. The problem: every wall is covered in glazed tile (which I know makes a difference) and the bars need to be screwed in.My question is this: how? I know that using just a drill bit will shatter the tile, even a carbide one because the tile‘s glazed. Thanks much, kisses and ten points to the best answer.
Put masking tape over the spot you want to drill. Drill through the tape and into the tile. This is supposed to help prevent chipping and cracking of the tile.
Q:My bf and I are removing the tiles from the bathroom wall with a chisel and hammer; however, we live in an apartment building, so I was wondering if there‘s an easier way to remove the tiles by softening the grout around them.
You and your b/f are doing it right. I hope you put a thick sheet down on the tub before you starting banging the old ones off though... before you re-tile, totally clean the tub and make sure there are no chips out of it... it's a pain to replace a tub when you just put up all new tiles. Best way I found to remove them is a floor scraper (thicker than a putty knife) and a hammer... just tap the scraper at the end of the handle and let 'em fly.... have fun... reno's are great!
Q:My tile is ugly mint green. nothing matches.I would like to know if I can paint this without it looking tacky.
You should probably go to a tile specialty store and ask them what is available. My guess would be that if something does exist it is not going to look very good. Fiberglass kits are made that can be bonded to the old tile and provide a new surface of a shower stall. These kits are not difficult to install, basically you clean the old tile and then glue the new panel over it. Check with you local home improvement store, they should have them. For a much better look I would suggest going to the home improvement store and taking their free tile classes. This would allow you to lay your own new tile. You will still need to remove the old tile first. Again the home improvement store is where they can tell you how to do this. It's going to be a major demolition requiring you to basically remove and replace your shower walls. This sounds like a lot of work doesn't it... it is but I've learned that doing something right is always better than doing it half way.
Q:Dont judge me, but can i install tile and drywall in a camper, without cracking, chipping, etc.
t1-11 but wanted drywall throughout the interior
Q:Will the home decoration tiles brand which are better? Can you tell me?
