Q:i am hoping to get a motorcycle and it will be my primary vehicle. i live in SC and it doesnt rain here much except for during the hurricane season. and it snows maybe once a year. is it possible to have this as my primary vehicle? what do i have to look out for. i am looking for answers from some one who has tried this.
Absolutely this can be done. Many things need to be taken under consideration however. How much do you commute everyday would determine how 'comfortable' your motorcycle should be. Do you often need to carry things (groceries, etc) if so consider investing in a motorcycle with saddlebags. Riding in the rain is very dangerous but it can be done easily if you know how. Advanced riders courses are available as well as plenty of rain gear specially made for motorcycle riders. Also making sure the tread on your tires is never worn down is crucial. Riding in the snow is never something I would recommend. It's simply too dangerous. Good luck!
Q:The demand for motorcycle tires imported by Dixie Import-Export is 32,000/year and may be assumed to be uniform throughout the year. The cost of ordering a shipment of tires is $500, and the cost of storing each tire for a year is $2. Determine how many tires should be in each shipment if the ordering and storage costs are to be minimized. (Assume that each shipment arrives just as the previous one has been sold.)
say you order n years worth of tires. storage costs for 1 year's worth is $64000. over the life of the order, you have to store anaverage of n/2 years worth per year. the total cost of the order is 500 + 32000n so the per year cost is 500/n + 32000 setting the derivative to 0, you get 500/n^2 32000 or n 8 order 8 years worth at a time (256000 tires)
Q:I see why they can‘t last quite as long as car tyres, but having to replace them after only 5000 miles sounds like a rip off to me. On a car this would mean going through 3 pairs of tyres every year?!
No remould is ever going anywhere near my Bandit 1200. Ideally your front and rear tyres should be matched according to the tyre manufacturer's recommendations. Your remould could be based on a Dunlop carcase, however, which would have the right profile to go with your front. Personally I would never take the chance, your life can depend on it.
Q:5 years old now and got 2000 on them now
Regardless of mileage, 5-6 years should be considered the maximum life of motorcycle tires. Performance tires are very soft, in order to give maximum traction, while touring tires give less grip, but last far longer. Also, front tires generally last longer than rears. The softest tires that one might find on a Sportster might last 5,000 miles (rear) and 8,000 miles (front). Touring tires would be good for up to perhaps 15,000 miles. Since grip drops as the tires wear, they really should be replaced BEFORE the tread wear indicators--which all tires have--are reached (2mm of tread left).
Q:I have a 2005 R1. The size of the rear tire is 190 50 17. Ive had Dunlops, that came stock. Then i switched to Pilot Powers with Micheline witch is a soft tire, right? Therefore wearing down faster then a normal tire? I use my bike to commute and the occasional run with the boys, so i want a tire that is gonna last me long. I called a dealer and i was told the Bridgestone BT021 is a longer lasting tire with harder rubber? I need advise. I would like to pay less then i did for the pilot power which was $165 just for the rear unenstalled.
Adolfo, you own an R1! If you do a lot of commuting then I'm not going to harp on about sport tyres. Michelin have brought out a new dual compound tyre for sport touring but I cannot remember the name. If you have seen the Michelin ad with Nicky Hayden on it, that is the tyre! Bridgestone also have great tyres as well. You will find that the Pilot Powers are a dual compound as well but they are a softer all round compound than a tourer because they need to support the horsepower coming from the latest sportsbikes. Make sure if you do a lot of commuting you check your tyre pressures at least every two or three days or before going for a ride with the boys! If its too low you will wear the middle out no matter what tyre you have! One last thing, I would suggest spending some money on a matching front as well or you will compromise handling and stability! Troy
Q:I am considering trying Kings motorcycle tires on my 1988 gsx600 katana. The model of tire is kt-9871 and kt-9872. They are around 50 bucks a tire and looks to be a good deal. I am just occationaly riding this bike and commuting sometimes. No race days or any crazy stuff. Do you think I need to have them balanced or just slap them on myself? Thanks. If you know anyother inexpenseve tires that may work for this bike please let me know. Sizes are Front 110/80h 17 Rear 140/80h 17.The Kings tires are a lower profile than what came stock. I cannot go any wider than 150 on the rear according to others on the internet.

Q:I was doing about 60 in a straight line and heard a pop. I then noticed the riding felt a lot different. Came to a safe stop and turned the bike off and as soon as I did that, I heard the air still hissing out of my rear tire. Found a small jagged looking hole right on the corner of a tread. Nothing was still in the tire. Called a buddy up, loaded it in his truck. Now I‘m getting a new tire. Just curious on what could have caused it. 2003 Yamaha R6, tube less tires. Thanks.
Any piece of scrap in the road. One night I got a flat on the way home. I thought I broke a spoke at first. The steel rod sticking out of the tire was the right length and diameter. Turned out to be just something I picked up going around the curve.
Q:Hello everybody. I‘m about to change my MV Agusta Brutale 1090R tires. In your opinion, for somebody that‘s trying to get maximum performance. decent mileage (at least 5k-6k miles), 10% track, 90% road, and of course most bang for their buck, which of the following tires would you recommend?-Metzler M5 Interact-Michelin Pilot Power 3-Avon 3D Ultrasport-Dunlop Q3-Pirelli Diablo Corsa II (I currently have these. Love em‘)
Stick with the Corsa's then.
Q:I want to get a 97 Honda Nighthawk 750 with only 6500 original miles. It looks really clean and has been garage kept. However, the owner keeps telling me she is cold blooded. That he doesn‘t ride her often, but that when he does she takes 20 minutes to warm up. What could that signify is wrong with the bike?
Twenty minutes to warm up sounds like a real pain. Maybe the carbs could be cleaned. I would suspect cleaning would be a good idea for a bike that old with so few miles on it. That means they probably didn't start it often and gas gummed up the tiny holes in the carb. My friend had a bike that took that long to warm up. We just had to take our time putting on jacket, gloves and helmet. If you like the bike and can afford a carb cleaning, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.
