LP gas (propane) and natural gas (methane) both use the same commercial additive to give them their distinctive odor, called mercaptin. as stated in your first answer LP gas is heavier than air and will statify, or pool at the lowest level around the leak, while natural gas is lighter than air and will pool at the highest point around the leak. whether the leak is large or small does not matter, if it is in the explosive range it can explode at any time, all it needs is an ignition source. a spark from anything can set it off, or a pilot light on a water heater, stove, oven, or furnace. it is possible to have a small leak that builds up in an area off the house that is not ventillated well and seldom used i'm sure you meant to ask if carbon monoxide detectors will detect gas leaks, they will not. the upper and lower explosive levels talked about in the first answer are both very dangerous. if the leak is above the upper explosive level, the concentration of gas in a house will drop into the explosive range very shortly after a door or window is opened and outside air is allowed into the house. the most evident sign of a gas leak is the smell of the odorant, some people say it smells like garlic, some people say it smells like a dead mouse, either way it really stinks. if you're around the smell for a long period of time you will become desensitized to it, meaning you'll get used to the smell and won't smell it anymore. if you use propane and your tank is running low you'll get a strong odor, that's because mercaptin is heavier than liquid propane and the solids of the mrecaptin pool at the bottom of the tank. if you smell gas, get out of the house immediately and call the gas company, they have very sensitive equipment that can detect the smallest gas leak.
