need the model of pump then i can see how meany watts it uses and tell you how long it will run on a inverter and i also would need the battery cca or if it is a upc back up unit. and they will use a small amount more when they are moving water due to head pressure and friction in the pump and pipe. get me more info and we can figure it out.

The possibility that the thermostat is up side down comes to mind. Chevy water pumps have been known to loose an impeller, but the collapsing upper hose suggests a vacuum is being pulled, so I don't think it is the water pump.

I'm not sure that what you are looking at isn't the relief hole and not the water discharge, which should be under water. How are you supplying water to your engine? Are you running in a barrel? The water pump should be replaced every 2-3 years, so unless you are going to do it yourself, take it to a shop and explain what you are observing. Taking the cowling off will have no effect on the water pump, so I'm guessing you are looking at the wrong place. P.S. This was a common error with Evinrude small motors back in the 70's and 80's, motors similar to yours. The exhaust fin was just behind the propeller. not higher up the leg

I have seen this many times on 9.87.5Merc'sThere is a plastic o-ring under the power head and it is probablly melted closed.There is a way to fix it without removing the powerhead.Remove the lower unit and pull out the water pickup tube.Then use a piece of brake line 5/16th sharpen on a 45 degree angle and push up the opening for the water pickup to open the passage.This will fix your water problem.
