- Q:I am replacing a regular light switch with a more fashionable looking design. When I took out the old light switch there was a red and a black wire attached. I am used to white and black. Which wire is considered the white wire when I am wiring this switch?
- It depends on how they ran the power to the switch. In a standard circuit, white is the neutral. In the switch leg, where you are working, there is no neutral. They can use any wires for a switch except green. You had seen black and white because those are the colors in a 2 conductor Romex cable. This may be a 3 conductor which has red, white, and black. In any case, each of the 2 loose wires go on one of the the brass screws of the switch, and the ground if there is one goes on the green. Some electricians will tape the white wire if it's used in a switch leg to indicate that it's not a neutral. Hope this helps.
- Q:I am re wiring a hanging lamp. I know the black wire is the hot. My problem is this, the replacement wire is gold. There is no apparent groove in the wire, but one side does have writing on it. If I remember correctly the side with the writing is the hot?
- Should not be major problem as long as it is just the lamp itself you are wiring as all grounds should be separate of the device itself ac current should in general for safety sake be regarded as hot on both sides. To many times i have seen white used as a hot leg in wiring three way switches
- Q:there is a loose wire in my labtop charger wire. can i fix it or prevent it from happening.
- Loose wires just happen - from the way a cable is bent, moved, stored,wrapped, etc... I think (providing it doesn't happen right after you get the product) that it's pretty much normal wear and tear over time. You could try to repair it, but it would involve removing the cable sheath and re-attaching the loose wire which may need soldering. You're probably better off just buying a charger. In my experience, cables tend to last longer if you don't tightly wrap or twist them during storage; I generally just loosely fold them.
- Q:I had my uncle-in-law hook up my American Bass Pro 800 Watt Amp but he used cheap wiring. The wire is fairly small and he told me it doesnt matter how big the wire is. But what i wanna know is, Is the wire giving the amp enough power or does American Bass Pro Amps suck?? Help please
- Okay, well the higher the watts the amp pulls the large cable you will need. My system pulls 500 watts (RMS) (1000 peak) and when i had it installed they ran 4 gauge wire from the battery to the amp, then used a separation block (4 gauge input and four 8 gauge outputs) to knock down the 4 gauge to 8 so it could connect to the amp. Usually the gauge wire that is the input size for the amp would be the wire you would want to run from the battery to the amp, unless you are running multiple amps. basically larger the amp=larger the wire needed hope this helps
- Q:What do you use to seal up the hole in the OUTSIDE wall where the cable TV and telephone wires and electrical wires all go thru? I want to replace my telephone wire coming in to the house, because I have DSL and it is really slow. I figured it couldn't hurt to replace the 45 year old wire coming in! :D I'm gonna use the best wire I can find (ANY SUGGESTIONS on what kinda wire to get? :D) to go from the telephone box outside to the DSL jack, but I need to no what to use to seal up the outside hole, when I rip out whatever is plugging it up now! :DThanks! ~Cindy! :D
- to add to what everyone said... sillicone caulking is what you need to use, it would be in the painting section (and plumbing section will have some too) of home depot if you plan on painting over this area you are going to have to substitute the silicone caulk with a paintable caulk, paint will not take to the silicone... CAT5 wire can be used, but as it is still on the voice circuit between the NID outside and your DSL jack you wont see much of a diffrence if you use CAT3 cable... CAT3 is voice grade cable, CAT5 is network grade cable... CAT3 is alittle easier to work with, as it is more flexable, and cheaper... but not by much... when you strip the outter jacket of the cable, leave at least 4-6 inches wraped inside the NID and the jack, so that if needed repairs can be made in the future.. blue/white to green solid blue to red and for line 2 (optional) orange/white to yellow solid orange to black if you are buying the wire per foot, then home depot will be fine, but if you are going to buy a box, check electrical and alarm supply stores, as there prices are much better then home depot...

Take π = 3.14

- I don't think that's safe because light fittings are not rated to carry that sort of current.
- Q:i am going to be installing a flood light outside, i am running the wire on the outside of the house. i have down some small electrical work light outlets and switches but not sure on running wire. i was looking at lowes at outdoor wire and there are different size gauges. just wondering what size or gauge is best to use for an outdoor flood light?
- Important! You need to check the breaker size. If it is a 20Amp circuit you must use #12 or greater. If it is a 15Amp circuit #14 or greater. Wire capacity should ALWAYS be equal to or greater than the circuit breaker.
- Q:function of a fire-wire for backing up data
- Its just a wire type, the A wire can Xfer at about 400mbps, and the B wire around 800, also USB 2.0 is around 480mbps, its just the wire type has nothing to do with the product that has the cable. Like an external hard drive can have a usb 2.0 wire a Esata, Sata, firewire, its all about the speed of the wire, nothing to do with helping backup files except for the time it takes to back them up.
