- Iron of under 25 is considered low. So a 5 is real low. Taking the iron pills will do the job pretty quickly. I am sure you doc checked you blood counts for RBC HCT and HBG. Those are the ones that if low require a transfusion, just you low iron would not indicate that. My mother uses Iron frying pans and pots instead of aluminium and she does not require iron pills because just cooking on iron gives her enough.
