- Q:I‘m having a small bathroom remodled. The floor isn‘t perfectly rectangular, there are some uneven areas because of the tub. I would like the opinion of a profession tiler (should there be one put there, somewhere)...should the floor tiles always be centered, or start lined up against a wall? Also, should the grout be completely dry before sealing it? Thanks.
- Yes the tiles need to be centered ,but always dry lay them out to see what size cut you ll be getting at the walls left to right. If you end up with less than a 1/2 tile, shift tile over 1/2 of a tile at the center, this gives you a bigger side cut. I personally like to do a whole tile starting at the door way,I just think this is a better look , but there again you can start in the middle and dry lay them out. As far as sealing grout read directions on your particular sealer. Most silicone based sealers need the grout to cure for 30 days. Penetrating sealers ( which I suggest) take only a 72 ( 3 day) cure time. Silicone sealers wont last as long and need resealing based on your usage and what you clean with. Penetrating sealers last for years. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q:If I have about 56 tile in bathroom that‘s 8x8 and the new tiles would be 13x13 how many would i need. And for the wall tile is 8x8 and have 28 the new would be 12x12 how many would i need
- Using the 8x8 and figuring they are whole tile, there are 2.25 pcs of 8x8 in a s/f. 56 pcs divided by 2.25 is 24.88 s/f There are 1.17 s/f per 13x13 tile. 24.88 divided by 1.17 s/f is 21.36 pcs of 13x13 or a bare minimum or 22 pcs. The wall figures at 28 pcs divided by 2.25 is 12.44 pc or a minimum of 13 pcs of 12x12. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q:Ok, the builder and an independent foundation company both say that no foundation damage happened, just some settlement. What should I do with these cracks on tiles and on walls. Would leaving them alone cause any problem? When and how should I fix those?
- If someone built your house and cracks have appeared then they should fix them.
- Q:tiles at the top of my pool have fallen off, these tiles are in the water. what is best or suggested adhesive to reinstall them?
- For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/JOsQj To add to the previous answer, you do want a thinset, but not just any thinset. Home Depot carries a brand of thinset called Flexbond. It allows for expansion and contraction of the concrete and tile. As for the grout, pick up an acrylic additive to use in place of water. It will hold up better in an outdoor setting. Hope this helps.
- Q:I wanted to do wall tiles with them. They are clear but I wanted to add color as well. Any ideas? I love decorating for less. Thank you.
- You'd see through the glass to the mounting mastic. That's probably not that attractive......
- Q:We will be tiling a backsplash directly onto drywall after our countertops are installed. My question is -- what do I do about the electrical outlets in that area? The tile is about 1/4 inch thick -- and I want the outlets even with the tile (right?) After I tile around the outlet openings, then how do you make them flush when you put everything back together? For example, do I just pull the sockets out so that the screw brackets sit on top of the tile? If so, then do I need to drill screw holes through the tile? If so, then how do I make sure that the tile does not break or crack?
- Normally, you have 1/4 of extra thread on the outlet screw to play with. If the screw isn't long enough ask someone at your local hardware store for a longer screw. DON'T use drywall screws because they will strip the threads on your electrical box. So yes, pull the sockets out and let the screw brackets sit on the tile.
- Q:I was wondering if self stick vinyl tile would work well on bathroom walls and if it would stick well to sheet rock or if i have to replace the sheetrock with plywood?
- Please don't follow through with your plans. Self stick tile is not meant for walls and will be a nightmare later on for you or for another homeowner who inherits this horrible mistake you are about to make. Self stick tile will destroy the walls when time comes to remove it. And, it will also be a breading ground for moldy cracks and may fall off due to moisture in the bathroom. If you are going to go through with the expense of covering your walls with plywood, you are also going to have to remove the door and window mouldings and baseboards....so you may as well just re sheetrock and paint. Forget about putting tacky vinyl floor tiles on the walls. EDIT: something to consider: if you put a treatment on the walls and need to get to the plumbing for repairs, there will be problems with getting the wall back together to match the wall treatment. So, make sure you have extra materials to deal with repairs.
- Q:help!! i need an estimate of ANY italian tile... like the cost per sq. ft. i really need it for a project!!! please make sure the tile works for the entire house (only inside) and light colored nothing dark plz and thank you =]
- hallo? .. u're asking for help, but not giving specific information. tiles are different range from price, quality, and size -even its italian tile ... how to calculate? we need to get down to your floor plan, and choosen of tiles, my dear ...
- Q:How can I remove ceramic tiles from a bathroom wall without damage the wall itself, as I want to paint the wall. Would steam help loosen the glue used?
- You need to plan that replacing some drywall is inevitable. I've installed thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and unless your bathroom walls are plywood, or concrete backer board, the act of tile removal will tear at the drywall in the removal process. Tile mortar (Quickset) is designed to bond Usually forever, and in that bonding it isn't going to just fall off at a touch,,,unless the wall behind it is already degraded. One option is to remove by scraping,,,STEAM will not work, though might further damage drywall. After scraping, rough sand as smooth as possible, and install new drywall over old. Then finish. Rev. Steven
- Q:How to fix the surface of the tile? How much is the thickness of the tile?
- Tiles filled with wall surface perpendicularity 3MM; flatness 2MM. Tile thickness plus mortar no more than 15CM.
