- if u have carpet in a closet then u can take a small piece from there where in won't be noticed and try to put in in the area that is damaged.....maybe use a liquid nail type glue which is found in the painting section of the hardware store

- I certainly think that oriental rugs can add greatly to the appearance of a formal living room. - Get a gallon jug of Acetone from Home Depot in the paint department. Pull all the old carpet up, pull up the tarboard sound deadening material, then pour out the Acetone and scrub the floor using steel wool to clean up any glue or tar that might be on the floor. Once you've got the floor pans clean, paint them with flat black paint to protect them from rusting. Finally, you can find replacement carpet at a parts store, just glue it down with contact cement.

I know that carpet is dirty but it also hides a lot. If you have a timber floor and then get rugs, aren't you getting the vaccuum out anyway? What do you think?
- Wood floor homes are noisier. Wood is easier to pick up tracked in dirt......you keep a dust mop handy and wet mop as necessary.......but with the dust mop the wet mopping is less. If you get throw or area rugs, yes, you have to vacuum and still maintain the wood (plus I have to watch out for the fring on the rugs..LOL ) Carpets look fine if you don't get something that shows dirt every other day. Still you do need to vacuum often and have it cleaned regularly. If you are selling, wood floors garner a higher return.......until they go out of fashion again....if they do. You mentioned the kids are almost gone......babies might return....so there you have grandchildren's tricycles, etc. Then your own health........as we get older we may need walking assistence and wheelchairs and walkers roll better on wood or very short pile carpeting. Throw rugs are not for people with walking problems........we trip over them, LOL!

- carpets are warmer than tile or hardwood floors. Carpeting offers some sound reduction especially in an apt setting for your below neighbors...except when it is time for you to vacuum. one does not need a carpet and most would do better without it.

- There is dust on the carpet, you can wash the broom in soapy water, sweep the carpet, with the dip, keep the broom moist, and then sprinkle with fine salt, and then broom cleaning, and finally wipe with a cloth clean.
