You will need to know something about the steel such as the yeild stress and E, the modulus of elasticity. The value of E is about the same for a wide range of steels. So long as the applied stress is below the yield stress, the strain is all elastic and is calculated from E. The real answer is that you can not answer this question since you do not know what the temperature is. Given the applied load, the change in length will be much different at room temperature than at 1500C.
Q:Surgical Steel Piercing Reaction?
Good quality surgical steel reactions are rare. (has a lot less nickel than stainless steel) They have a teeny amount of nickel, but even the most serious reactors rarely have problems with it. Titanium has even less nickel. Niobium none (but that can be hard to find) Theres also quartz, which is fine to pierce with, but not for sports. I react to alot of cheap 'metals'. Which mostly end up being nickel plated. Like necklaces and belt buckles. Even some gold (which is nowhere near as good as people seem to think) Never had a problem with surgical steel or ti. I'd get titanium if you're worried. Its readily available.

440 is stainless steel, and isn't designed for functional swords. Carbon steel blades are. I'd say that if you're looking for a functional sword, forget about this one. It's probably a wall-hanger. Most swords today are.

Go to junkyard get old leaf spring, cut out knife, start sharpening. Why waste time heat treating steel when the spring steel as already be done.
Q:How was Steel Brightblade born when Sturm was killed by Kitiara?
Steel was conceived before Sturm was killed. However, my personal sentiment is that the series was ridiculously overcommercialized, they tried to add so many pre-stories and post-stories to the original 3 (or 6) that the quality of the plotline has become totally diluted. Keep in mind that Sturm also traveled to one of the moons in a hot-air ballon in a prequel story.
Q:I have a question in alloy steel?
Steel is basically an alloy of iron and carbon that has more than 0% carbon and less than 2% carbon. The alloy of carbon and iron with more than 2% carbon is considered cast iron. The bessemer process converts cast iron to steel by injecting oxygen into molter cast iron to burn off the excess carbon. Steel is also modified by adding additional elements like silicon, molydenum, vanadium, chrome, etc.
Q:what is a better grade of steel?
SAE 440 is the best. Classified as high grade cutlery steel. There are various grades of 440: A, B, C, and F. 440 A is the most stain resistant while 440 C has the most carbon and can achieve the highest hardness (Best edge Retention). SAE 440 Chemistry: 16 - 18% Chromium, 0.60 - 1.2% Carbon, 0.75% Molybdenum. SAE 420 is pretty good. Classified as cutlery steel, it is a stain resistant grade but has less chromium and significantly less carbon than SAE 440. SAE 420 Chemistry: 12 - 14% Chromium, 0.15% Carbon (min), 0 Molybdenum Chromium is what makes the steel corrosion resistant. It also adds toughness. Molybdenum adds extra corrosion resistance and adds hardenability. So you can see by chemical components that 440 is highest quality although that also means more cost. 1045 and 1065 are low quality steels and you should probably never use them for a knife. The 1 indicates plain carbon steel with little other alloying elements. The last two digits indicate how much carbon is in the steel. 1045 has 0.45% carbon, mid-range hardenability. 1065 has 0.65% carbon, high hardenability. So if I had to choose I would choose 1065 over 1045 but the difference isn't that noticeable. Everything I said here assumes they have all had the optimum Quench and Temper heat-treatment for their chemistry grade.
