- You are probably better off buying solar cells and making your own solar panel. That is what I plan to do. Figure in the cost of batteries, an inverter, and maybe a charge controller. You will need to test the solar panels to make sure you have enough power to power up everything you have. If not, make additional solar panels, and connect them together. Nevertheless, I think it still might cost way over $200, but I think it is the cheapest way to go.

- I don't know if the guy is right about cells burning out if they are covered. You should look on the Internet for insolation tables for your area to see the effective hours of sunlight. Then guesstimate the percentage of time the panels will be shaded. Those trees may make the solar thing a poor idea. He is right about the trees reducing you efficiency. If a panel is shaded about 0 percent, its output drops to close to zero. My panels are five years old, and I have washed them twice. There as been no noticeable dropoff in output.

- I have had my system for almost a year and love it. I got a 3.74 kwh/dc system, my highest electric bill was $35 in the dead of winter and last month was $6.. In my area the last few rate increased have been well over 5% and they are talking up to 2% next year. Just keep in mind the amount of energy you use will determine how large of a system will work best for you. My system is tied to the grid, so I don't need a storage system. My utility has net metering, so I sell them my excess during the day and buy back what I need at night.
