Q:I have a friend that trying to sell me a watch. He says it is an antique Elgin pocket watch, but says it is a quartz watch. I haven't seen it yet but it say you have to wind it up. Is he possibly mistaken in saying it is quartz? Did they ever make a quartz watch that winded up it is that something you only had to do to watch with mechanical movements?

I all depends on the type, quality, and the abundance of the quartz. There really is no set rate for quartz. There are many kinds. Amethyst, Citrine, Ametrine (one of the most valuable because of rarity), smokey quartz, white quartz, milky quartz, rose quartz, etc. usually you can get milky, white, and rose quartz relatively cheap tumbled or rough. Most of your faceted quartz costs more such as amethyst, smokey quartz, ametrine, citrine. average cost for quarts is relatively cheap. you can get it almost anywhere. bead stores, okorder, jewelery stores, even outside if your in a place like in my neck of the woods. I found amethyst about 1/4 lb worth, clear crystal about 300cts, another amethyst about the same size as the white crystal and I couldn't tell you how much white and milky quartz I have. I live in NJ and PA.

It's not quartz, its quartz glass which is acceptable for new piercings. Yes the retainer will be noticable. There is no screw on end for a quartz glass retainer (at least not the styles I have seen). This is why piercers prefer not to use them. They have a risk of slipping out. They also move in and out of the piercing more and can drag dirt back into the wound. They can also escape entirely, so you'll need to at least buy a spare. If you get pierced with a retainer you can switch to a shorter one of the same quality after your swelling has gone down (minimum of 2 weeks). This will be less noticable but obviously has more risk of sneaking out of your lip and getting lost. When you are pierced with a retainer you will HAVE TO leave it in place. No switching out for studs at other times durring the day. Changing your jewlery will irritate your piercing, slow your healing, and it will risk infection. If you're going to commit to being pierced with a retainer, then wear it as you're supposed to. It's possible to heal with a retainer BUUUUUUUT!!!! You will have to behave with it. If you don't your piercing will be a frustrating mess. If you can convince your piercer that you are serious, try it. Keep in mind though that no retainer is invisible. Be sure you're not risking your job for a piercing.
