- Remove the belt and try to turn it by hand. If it makes a growling noise or you can feel roughness in the bearing, then you should replace the pump. Also, look for any leaks anywhere around the water pump that would suggest it needs replacement. If there's no roughness or leaks at the pump, look elsewhere for a leak. - Agree with motorhead. You (question asker) replaced the pump, did you see anything that could break? Only issue with GM water pumps is normally if the cooling system is abused and fluid never changed, which can lead to the impellers rotting away. If the water pump fails fails (not just a leaking seal, the normal failure mode) the engine will overheat. The waterpump is the only thing that moves coolant, if the coolant can't move, the engine will fail from overheating. Take the belt off and see what happens for yourself. Did you purge the cooling system if needed? Did you use a genuine AC Delco thermostat instead of whatever the parts store handed you (probably Stant)?

- Have it towed, the $60 towing bill is lot less than a new engine, the 1st thing that will happen is one of the heads will crack, next water will mix in with the oil, next engine stops from overheated. Don't have the car pushed, the newer transmissions won't allow this. Ask if who's doing the repairs can tow it free if they fix it, or cut the cost.

- Thanks for the plug Howard! Although the Imperial club does not sell or distribute any parts, there are some good resources and tips there. What I do recommend is that you buy a copy of Hemmings and look up some of the services out there that are water pump specialists. Your water pump is a very unique one in that it probably has not been available since WWII. So careful rebuilding of the original one in your car is key.
- Q:It's been slowly leaking for awhile now, but today it dumped brown water out like a bucket, when I shut it off facing up hill.
- It is really very simple,but get a repair manual to guide you. Only problem I had changing one was trying to align new water pump , gasket and holes all at the same time in a confined area. Here is a tip , get two long bolts and remove the heads,screw them in two mounting holes temporarily, as studs, to align the whole thing then remove them and install the correct bolts after you have secured water pump in place. I also noticed that when we are running water the water pump goes crazy fast, i can hear it because its a mobile home.
- if you are sure that your well is good then .......... sounds like it is time for a new pump - money saved $150, plumber house call pretty easy fix get your pipe wrenches after you turn of all the water mains and remove the pump - even go borrow some or buy some still cheaper haul it to menards or lowes puchace and identical one in a box - name may be different read the instructions - this is the important part reinstall the pump tada all done - good days work for a novice - accomplished something and earned that hot shower and saves about $300 or more by not calling the plumber - plus that 150 for a total of about 450 - cha ching - new blue jean for the kids, a car payment whatever suits
