Q:Which is stronger for cars, carbon fiber or steel?
At a reasonably high speed, both cars would be undrivable. That's by design, not due to the strength/weakness of the materials. The energy in an impact needs to go somewhere. Cars are designed so the body and the frame will bend and break, reducing the impact on the occupants. If the car is too rigid the chances of the occupants being injured increases. Carbon fiber composites do have a better strength to weight ratio than steel but they're also a lot less dense, so the same volume of material will have a similar strength. The primary benefit to carbon fiber is that for a part of the same strength the carbon fiber part will weigh less than the steel part.
Q:what is the diiferent in composition between mild steel and cast iron?
Mild steel is iron that has had most of the carbon removed in an open hearth furnace or a Bessemer converter. It is mainly the carbon content that makes iron brittle (iron is brittle, not steel).
Q:What Steel guitar should I buy?
Hi, Since you haven't mentioned a price range, all I can say is that there are plenty of good guitar brands in the moderate to high price range. A good place to start would be to check out these brands - Martin, Taylor, Yamaha, Gibson. There are plenty more but these will get you started. In a lower price range - Epiphone, Takamine and Washburn have some nice guitars as well. There are a LOT of good brands that I haven't covered. These are just the usual suspects. Most of these will be good instruments and they vary in the quality of the wood used and in finer points of their design build, so don't worry too much about finding a 'gem'. Get one of the store staff members to play the guitars a little bit for you and you can pick out the one that sounds best. The sound is the most important. Happy hunting! :) Edit: jcr has a point. I assumed your're talking about a steel string acoustic.
Q:Stainless steel pots?
The difference in stainless steel cookware is the amount of different metals used when making them. 18-10 is the best combination. I have Tramontina SS pots and pans and love them. Nice heavy bottoms that evenly heat. Getting used to cooking with stainless is a bit difficult. You need to start with high heat and then turn it down when you add ingredients. This assists in food not sticking.
Q:Recycling steel baked bean cans?
Steel is one of the most recycled materials on the planet... Unless you know a recycler/steel refiner/manufacturer however, it would be mighty difficult for you to have someone melt down all your baked bean (a somewhat American dish, I'd say) cans. Plus, think how many baked beans you'd have to eat to be able to build anything of substance. Don't know where you would take it in Australia - I'm in the US where a lot of municipalities collect mixed recyclables.
Q:What oil to use on knife steel?
It's stainless steel so it doesn't really need to be oiled. Anything will do for oil if you want to wipe it down. Just put a little on a paper towel and give it a once-over.
Q:what do you use (wet stone or steel) to sharpen a carbon knife blade?
There are many ways to sharpen knives. I guess your question is whether to use the steel that comes with knives, or a stone. Steels are only to straighten the edge, which is stropping. They won't sharpen a truly dull knife. For that you need a real sharpening system, of which a whet stone is one. The edge of a knife will get wavy with use - that's what the steel is for, to true it back up.
Q:Is Steel a Pure Substance or a Mixture?
Scott, there are 3 types of materials: elements, compounds, and mixtures. Compounds are covalently bonded elements. Compounds and elements are both considered 'pure' substances. Mixtures are not bonded in any fashion. So a steel mixture can have varying amounts of iron, carbon, silica, molybdenum, etc., giving the steel the desired properties (strength, rigidity, rust resistance, etc.).
Q:Handgun steel question...?
The chrome moly alloy used in blued steel guns is the strongest thing out there today. Stainless guns sacrifice a little in strength in exchange for their rust resistance. Every maker has their own special alloys for various parts as well as proprietary techniques for hardening and tempering depending on the use a part will be put to. Keep in mind that the harder you make steel the more brittle it becomes. Especially true in knife blades also. A custom knife blade could be made much harder than they are, but would shatter under hard use.
Q:Best battle-ready katana steel?
Go okorder.com/ They have a list of the different types of steel and the qualities of them. Bugei Trading sells very good swords. i prefer the Cheness katana simply because they sell a nice sword at a lower price. Currently I use the Cheness Kazi Ko-Katana. It has a shorter blade length with allows me to do the draw properly for the style I practice. Hope this helps! P.S. just for reference, when I hear the term, Battle Ready, it makes my skin crawl. That terminology simply is not used by experienced martial artists. It is like using the word Studio to describe a martial arts school. EDIT: Peter Gun makes a good point about steel. For what its worth, Ive had several Paul Chen katana.
