Q:First off, I know absolutely nothing about cars. Now that that's out the way, I have 16 inch rims but i want to get a set of 20s, 22s, or 24s. Will i need to get my car lifted to get bigger rims? I was talking to a guy that I go to school with and he was saying something about lifting or lowering the car..i have no idea what he meant but will i need to have this done?
If you go with 20's you will probably not have to make any changes to the suspension. You just get tires that are much thinner (lower profile) and it makes up for how big the rims are. If you get rims any bigger than 20 inches you will likely have problems with them rubbing inside the fenders and your ride quality will suck (depends on what kind of car it is). Any rim shop or tire shop should be able to help you get the right size tires so they fit without lifting the car. The right size tires will also help your speedometer stay fairly accurate.
Q:It‘s a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. It has a wheelchair lift on the rear and I was wondering if it is ok to take it through an automatic car wash? Thanks.
Nope. You'll tear up the car wash and they are quite expensive to repair. If an attendant is there they probably won't even let you go through. Find a 'touchless' one and you should be OK but they do a real poor job.
Q:How much torque would an electric motor have to have to lift an average car/operate an electronic car jack ?
If the mechanical advantage(gear ratio) is high enough you could lifyt a car with 1 fly power crawling on a tread mill, But; it would take all year to do it.
Q:Who remembers when you had to access the gas tank of a car by lifting up the license plate?
My 71 220 MBZ had the gas cap under the plate. Nice old car.
Q:Hi, my car was towed today from a parallel parked spot. It‘s a manual transmission with anti-theft alarm. When I got my car, I checked for damage, no visible damage. However, I was curious, my car was parked in 1st gear, but when I got it back, it was in neutral. Did the tow guy get into my car to put it into neutral? or did he have a tool to pop the shifter to neutral from the outside? I have anti-theft alarm, how did he break in so easily? I forgot to check if the doors were locked, when I got it back. Please enlighten me how he did it. Thanks
He could have moved the shifter from underneath the car after he jacked it up.
Q:I have a ford taurus, I wanna change my own oil. My mom also has a Taurus. How safe would it be to use our two spare tire jacks to lift the front end of my car to drain the oil? Assuming I use the parking brake and block the tires etc, of course.
NO!, You can get Jack STANDS pretty cheap, DO not crawl under a car on jack(s). Cinder blocks are OK.
Q:I was wondering why cars don‘t work like airfoils due to their shape. I‘m talking a flat bottom with a curvy top. Sure not your ideal Epler airfoil but why is it that an airplane doesn‘t suddenly shoot up from the road? Is it the density of the car. Also cars usually want downwards force (inverted lift) for more traction right so I suppose that could be a reason.
You let the cat out of the bag when you said: I changed the motor, transmission mounts and half-shafts! CV axles never break, there's nothing to wear-out. A solid piece of steel axle shafting does not break . The half-shafts aren't the correct part number or your buying crappy box store parts. It isn't possible for a rip roaring 115 horsepower engine to break an axle shaft.
