- Q:I drive a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander and I am required to change my timing belt as part of preventive maintenance. When I had been to Firestone, they quoted $998 for Timing Belt Water Pump (both parts labor). When I called Midas, they quoted $550 for the same. Does anyone know why there is such a big difference? I have been a regular at Firestone, so Midas is new to me. Are they reliable? Midas is quoting low now, but would there be a surprise charge after I get it done? BTW, how is a water pump related to a timing belt??
- When you remove the timing belt cover, then the water pump is internally built into the engine block. It is a couple hours work, so you don't want to pay that labour charge again...6 months later for a water pump problem. Honestly.. a rubber timing belt is about 35 dollars. and a water pump is about 65 dollars. And the labor is about 3 hours maximum. Any good mechanic can do this in the driveway. So... don't feel any loyalty at all to Firestone or Midas, or uncle Louis if you can save some money. There is absolutely NO delicate adjustments, or computerized readings necessary to do this work. $998?? that's the price for lonely women who don't have a father or boyfriend to help them. Yeah... you teen-age mechanics can give me all the thumbs downs you like. I've done a few belts and water pumps. It's a few hours, but easy! THE WATER PUMP NEVER HOLDS THE TENSION ON THE BELT. That is the tensioner pulley, a separate item. teenage armchair mechanics!

- 1st off juan needs to get a life. now to help you .buy a haynes manual so you can go and do the removal and replacement of your water pump. step 1) remove the fan shroud 2) drain the coolant. make sure you do this so your critters won't drink it 3) remove the radiator. 4) remove the fan but do not remove the belt. this helps keep the fan from moving while you remove the bolts. if you have an electric fan remove this at the same time you remove the radiator 5) referring to the haynes manual remove any accessories that might be attached to the water pump 6) remove the pump. please refer to the haynes manual to insure you do the removal and re-instal correctly. oh yea, don't get fustrated . if you do just take a break. good luck and happy jeepin
- Q:I have a '97 Grand Prix with a 3800 V-6. There is a single bolt on the left side of the water pump that is directly behind the power steering pump pulley. How do you get the PS pump pulley off? I pulled a tricep trying to get this thing loose, and I'm no further now than when I started on it. Can anybody give me a tip on removing the pulley or the whole PS pump? I have a brand new water pump that I can't get on because of this fine piece of design by the brilliant engineers at GM!
- here is a step by step on how to re move the pump is a lot easier than tring to pull off the pulley plus it will not come off when it on the engine there is no room for thr puller.

- $70-$150 +cost of pump. Most shops have certain maintenance hours for certain jobs. Call around for exact pricing. Honestly, if you have a sockets (metric) and wrenches you can do it yourself in about an hour or two, maybe less. You don't have to mechanically inclind to replace the water pump on the 97 Wrangler. If you do it, I do recommend buying a Haynes/Chilton's book if you don't really have a clue. If you need to buy the tools, book, pump (gasket should come with it), water pump RTV, and coolant. That will still be a lot cheaper than paying somebody. Plus, you will get the joy of doing it yourself. Also, you could put the savings into a high-flow pump, vice original equipment.

- Q:I suddenly have this rattle noise whenever the engine is running but it diminishes with speed. It almost sounds like spark knock but spark knock would get worse at speed. It could be the water pump. Would a water pump get louder with speed, or go away as this does? I feel a tiny bit of in-out motion in the shaft but not side to side. Car is a Geo Metro and does have hydraulic lifters.
