In terms of types, it depends on whether he is going to be field kept, stable kept, on a combined system and if he will be clipped in the winter. It also depends on the individual - some horses feel the cold more than others. It also depends on the storage space you have at the yard. My Connemara is on a combined system (in at night, out during the day) and has a hunter clip in the winter. These are the types of rugs he has: -Lightweight turnout -Middleweight turnout -Heavyweight turnout -Detachable neck cover for turnout rugs -Fly rug -Fleece coolers (we have a few of these as we like to keep one worn and the others clean for after bathing him when we are going competing) -Lightweight stable rug -Middleweight stable rug -Heavyweight stable rug -Duvet-type under rug -Summer sheet In the winter we layer rugs depending on the weather and the clip he has - he often starts with a blanket clip and once that starts to grow out, he has a hunter clip and requires more or different rugs. Rugs that are clean and not currently in use are left in the bags the cleaning lady put them in (we send rugs off to be cleaned a couple of times a year) and are stored in a wardrobe in a container provided by the yard we're on so they stay clean and dry. The rugs we currently use (fly rug, summer sheet, fleece, LW T/O) are hanging on racks in his stable - it may be summer, but the weather has no idea what to do so he is occasionally wearing a summer sheet or fleece at night. As for brands, it's trial and error. Our turnout rugs are Amigo and are about 12 years old and in excellent condition; our fly rug, under rug, summer sheet and one of the fleeces are Masta (again quite old - fly rug on its last legs though!); and his stable rugs all came with him. He did have two turnouts that came with him, but they got torn in the field - we tried patching them up, but they eventually died on us.

- some carpeting comes with a sheen kind of covering called Scotch Guard (it's nothing like plastic, it was sprayed on at the factory). Don't worry about keeping it spotless (just keep ink off of it, tar from your shoes, and paints and nail polish and nail polish remover, clorox, etc.) You can always spot clean a carpet, and you can always have guys come in and for around $40 a room they can steam clean that carpet. Maybe every few years or so.

- I purchased a Bissell steam cleaner a few years ago. It works extremely well. I only use Resolve rug cleaner in it even though the directions say to only use Bissell products. I've used the rug doctor in the past and my cleaner works at least as well.

- It had better to change the carpet, if you use bamboo charcoal or bamboo vinegar, then you can remove peciliar smell. because the bamboo itself has super strong adsorption action, it can adsorb formaldehyde, benzene and other harmful gases, a lot of family decoration use them, also they can mothproof mould proof and moisture-proof, the effect is very large. You can search some information about the bamboo charcoal. But this is a temporary solution, not permanent method. It seems that your carpets produce odour all the time as you say. If like this, you had better to change the carpets. It is good for human body, and you needn't to buy a bamboo charcoal.

- The Kool coats are good rugs. Personally I don't use the lites, I use the regular as they are more resistant to rips etc. Same rug cut, just a heavier material. If it is hot where you are they will be great for your horse. My fellow had the regular on all summer (NSW/VIC border 44c) and I never found him sweating at all. But if you horse is not in with others who may rip it, the lite will be fine. They are a very generous rug in size, generally don't rub and have a good tail flap. They are a really good price and the sale is going to end soon! Now.... on that note.... I really did not need to be directed to the Horseland catalogue, as I have already spent WAAAAY TOO MUCH already this month!!! Seeing the catalogue reminded of a couple of things I could get, that I really don't need. LOL ;-) They rug will be fine for you. Good luck ;-) ADD - I use the weatherbeeta rugs with belly straps and my cottons don't have belly straps. As long as you have them adjusted correctly they are fine ;-)
