Elastic bands likely follow Hooke's law approximately only for a limited range. Glass and steel are far more 'elastic.' If you drop a 'ball' of a given substance and it returns to the exact same elevation, it is perfectly elastic (giving back all its stored energy due to the fall). Putty is far less elastic than rubber. Rubber (natural or synthetic) is composed of polymers (large strings of molecules that use space inefficiently). When you stretch an elastic band it pulls all the molecules into nearly a straight line (eliminating 'wasted' space). After that the molecules resist further stretching. Rubber is also a plastic (can be molded) and possesses an 'elastic' memory. I would put down a rubber membrane roof. First you lay down a layer of fiber board called traffic top in some place, This is screwed down with holding plates (octagon shaped pieces of metal about 4 inches across). Then you lay the membrane on top of that and secure the edges. Rubber roofing comes in 2 thickness. It generally comes in 2 widths, 10' and 20' and the length can be custom ordered or in set lengths depending upon your supplier. The edges of the roof are generally secure4d with termination bars. They are 10' in length with holes for screws. The screws should come with a rubber washer attached. If you need to make a seam in the membrane make sure you buy the right stuff - not rubber cement. It is very similar but it is formulated for the rubber membrane. You will also need to buy some cleaner if you are making seams. Also make sure you do not repeat do not use any tar or petroleum based sealers as this will deteriorate the rubber. They make a special material for this and will say on the label it is for rubber roofs.

Q:I just had a bell randomly go off in my apartment, yet my new-age fire alarms have not gone off so I'm not sure what this bell is. It won't turn off, there is no button, and it's wired to something but the wire does not vibrate. It looks like maybe pre 1950-40s and metal. The little 2x3 box beneath it and the bell itself are really warm. Is this maybe an old heat detector? I checked the basement which I'm on top of (1st floor apartment in old house) and nothing is on fire or anything and i haven't heard anything from the upstairs tenants. I'm going to call the owner in the morning but was a bit concerned, just in case it might be a gas detector either. The house isn't even warm let alone hot. Any thoughts?
