- Q:therefore creating a gap in the center of the wall for grouting... or tiling one tile and grouting it with the gap at the wall and the next tile side putting a grout line down that way

- Q:Is $4 a square foot a good price for labor? How about $1.49 for each 20x20 porcelein tile? Those are my quotes and want to see if I should do it. In Texas and they told me it will include taking out old carpet and laying down tile plus grout.
- About 1.25 a square foot to lay only..not material included..this is with minimum floor prep to do and if tiles are not cut diagonally...Diagonal laid tiles require alot more cutting and handling, layout etc..so is a little more for this...4.00 A square foot is way out of line...
- Q:Ok we are remodeling our kitchen and have the area between the counter tops and the bottom of the upper cabinets that is currently some ugly green tiles. Very small ones at that. We do not want the hassle to remove these and try to replace with something more attractive. We are looking for solutions to just cover the tiles with something d-i-y and not too expensive. I have seen a lot of peel and stick stuff but don't know if it can be used on tiles. Please give suggestions!
- Peel and stick will not work. Everybody is else is right that you'd be much happier removing the old tile and either re-tiling or just using wall underneath (if needs repair you may have to cover with a new thin sheet of drywall.) If you refuse to do it......you could just paint the tile. Clean it really well, prime it, and paint over the top. It's the easiest and cheapest way to cover it up. Once again, I have to say that I think if you are going through all of the trouble to remodel the kitchen, you might as well just remove the old tile and replace it with new. You could get subway tile, which is cheap and timeless.......
- Q:We have cement tiles in our apartment. To wash them, I just use liquid soap and water; I don‘t want to use toxic products. The tiles are dull-looking, though. How do I get them to shine?
- Please get rid of the liquid soap. Most likely leaving a residue on the flooring that will actually attract dirt.. Some tiles are not meant to shine because of there construction. They need a matte finish to provide their slip resistance. Strip the flooring using a OTC detergent cleaner. And then see how they look. Could be just a build up from you and other tenants.. - You would have to get quotes from several tile layers. Once you have their quotes, it would be up to you to select the tile layer that either offered you the most economical rate, the one you feel comfortable with. You might consider a handyman. In this scenario you would purchase the tile and your handyman would lay the tile. You handyman would be a lot cheaper than a contractor. Whom ever you decide to select, your best option is to get a referral from a friend, relative or co-worker. - Q:I was told by one guy at Menards to use a 1/4 teeth trowel for 6-1/2‘‘ x 1/4‘‘ floor tiles. I am worried this will be too much glue and will ooze out the 3/16‘‘ gaps between tiles. then it will be a nightmare mess, and can‘t grout.Also do you just lay the tiles on the glue? or press down ?how much?Thank you very much
- Coverage is the most important thing you need.. Although I d NEVER use a mastic on a floor because it s much more expensive I ve always used a thinset (cement based) adhesive.. When setting a tile gently push the tile into the glue w/ a twisting / turning motion.. This sets the tile into the adhesive better.Occasionally lift a tile up by carefully prying up on it and check the coverage on the backing..You ll want approx. an 80% coverage.. A 1/4 x1/4 size trowel will work but by personal choice I ll use a 1/4 x 3/8 deep trowel if it s a hard bodied tile . For a soft bodied tile ( usually have lugs or teats for spacing on the edge ) I ll then put them together and use a 1/4 x 1/4 trowel. Use the RIGHT type of grout for the type of tile your using.. If you are using a mastic I d wash or clean out the grout joint since grouts won t properly bond to a mastic like they will to a cement type adhesive.. GL

- Adjust? Ok... that's an interesting way to put it. Colors that go with green are brown, tan, burgandy, and peach.

- Q:I bought tile effect laminate flooring for my kitchen. How do I stagger the joints, but line the grout seems up at the same time? There are four equal tiles per a plank.
- The tiles should be the same size or in a pattern such that you can off set the joints and still have the tilegrout lines still line up. Or some of them you can both off set the joints and do a offset or brick pattern in the laminate itself. This type of laminate you ll need more than normal scrap because you will scrap more out on this type of laminate. - Q:I‘m gutting my bathroom and will be tiling the floor and then adding a new vanity and a new toilet.The question is, do you tile before you put in the toilet and new vanity or do you put in these items first and then tile around them? Concrete slab foundation that I‘m currently working on leveling.
- Definitely before. Its just the right way, and anyway you'd have to do a lot more intricate cuts to make it look right. Also, mark where the vanity will sit and just go a couple of inches underneath and you can save a few tiles. After Diy Doc's answer, let me add that if you finish and didn't break too many tiles cutting them and have the extras, by all means fill in under the vanity the next day if you want. I just didn't want you to run short. Thanks Doc
