Q:I just had my car serviced about two months ago. I drive longs distances quite a bit, and I‘ve driven 1400 miles since I had my car serviced. But about a month ago the service engine soon light came on, and won‘t go off. I am thinking it might be a O2 censor or something but I don‘t know. And I don‘t have the money to go get it checked out, but if someone could give me advice, I can fix smaller stuff by myself (i.e. spark plugs, O2 censors, etc.). Does anyone have an idea of why this light won‘t go off?

AutoZone and most auto stores like them will connect an OBDII reader to your car and tell you what the problem is for free. They are hoping to sell you the parts you need to fix the car. And from your posting, they probably will since you can take care of the minor problems yourself and save bunches of money. The only way to get the light to go off permanently is to read the code and fix what's broken.

You need to pull DTC's with a scanner. Most likely since the car is jerking, the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the transmission is bad.

Q:Today my engine started making a hum - it sounds like one of the belts. Shortly after the check engine light came on. I ran a check and it says system running lean. I checked the gas cap and it was hardly on. I reset the system so the light is now off - it has not come back on. The sound from the engine continues. Do you think the sound from what presumably could be a belt and the system running lean code are related or coincidences? I have a 2006 Volvo S40.

Q:Just recently our airbag light started flashing. There has not been any damage to the vehicle. Is there a way to diagnose where the problem originates if you have a wiring diagram? The dealer wants $130 just to find where the problem is and then repair is extra on top of that.

Check the warranty limits on the SRS system, it may be 10 years. Warranties on SRS systems are much longer than the rest of the vehicle. Q:The service air conditioner light on our 1991 Cadillac sedan deville 4.9 comes on when I turn the air conditioner on. The electronic climate control will not let me turn on the heat or the ac. Any trouble codes might lead to better diagnosing. A shop would have to test to see which system sensors, relays or other areas are not getting power or malfunctioning or diagnose a problem with the main climate control unit. Parts and labor can get pretty spendy so many people opt to switch out the automatic climate controls for a manual control system if the car is worth keeping long term or alter the climate system to perform more manually.bypassing the computer controls with on-off switches mounted to the instrument panel or console mounting platform.
