go to Autozone or Advance Auto. they will test your battery and alternator for free. but it sounds to me like you may have a loose wire connection going to the speedometer, because if it were draining your battery you would first notice the headlights going dim. my girlfriends Explorers light went out and it was a fuse under the hood. try getting your arm under the dash with a flashlight and wiggle the bundles of wires. have a friend watching the speedo and make sure it's dark so you can see if they come on.

Go to any auto parts store and have them check it for free. If you have a code P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1) then it is likely a vacuum leak. Ask them to show you the PCV elbow. the hose running the PCV valve frequently dries out and cracks open, causing an inefficient fuel-to-air ratio, which would then elicit a rough idle. This is a very common problem on those cars.

Advanced Auto Parts stores have a machine that they can hook up to your car for free and it will tell you why your check engine light is on. If you don't have an Advanced Auto near you, most other car part chain stores will probably do this. However, the problem will probably require a mechanic to fix it. Its possible the bodyshop may have forgotten to hook up the wiring harness that controls the vehicle's lighting system. They may have had to disconnect the wiring to the headlights in order to work on the front end of your vehicle. Pop the hood and check to see that the bulbs have wires leading to them, you might see the plugs that go to the bulbs just laying there and simply have to be plugged in. If the left blinker stays on and shows up on your dash as staying on, you have a faulty bulb somewhere. Gas tanks don't normally make noise HOWEVER if it is there's a good chance the tank is loose. PARK THE CAR. Don't take any chances with weird noises.
